As we know, it can get really expensive defending oneself i one ever has to shoot in self defense -- grand jury, criminal defense, civil defense.

Which insurance company/policy do you think provides best value?

Have you ever made a claim -- if so, how did it go?

You might be thinking of legal representation instead of Insurance. There are pre-paid legal services but I wouldn't trust one of them with my 2A rights, would you? There's a way to find 2A friendly lawyers in your area, wherever you live, and you may be able to speak to them regarding retainers or what to expect if you are involved in a shooting.

I would expect that there is no cut and dry way to answer that, since all cases are different with lots of variables.

I have no idea what USAA does under those circumstances, but I'd put my money on them, if we're just talking about a company living up to its responsibilities in coverage.

It's been discussed here before. Generally, there is no insurance policy you can buy to pay for your criminal defense. As for civil liability defense, all you should care about is policy limits and premiums. It's up to them to decide if they want to pay out or defend the case.

-NONE

The best thing you can do is develop a relationship with a criminal defense attorney before you need him. If you really want to be prepared you should deposit a retainer with him in advance so that you are guaranteed he will get out of bed at 3am to meet you in a police interrogation room, you have to at least speak with someone and have their number in your phone. Spending $2k to have an attorney show up before you make a bone headed confession will save you $100k down the road for a trial.

Insurance would be almost useless in this situation. Anyone who has ever made a claim with an insurance company knows how difficult it is to get anything. Imagine trying to do this from the police interrogation room with your one phone call. The insurance company would need two months to investigate, demand and examination under oath, then deny you.

If you really want insurance get 10 friends and pool together $5-25k or whatever you can afford and deposit it with a criminal defense attorney as retainer in case any of you get caught up in something. I'm sure you can work out an agreement with your friends and the attorney determining when exactly the retainer can be used. (i.e. only a shooting, are spouses covered, and how you get your money out if move away or something)
