Which is better? I just saw a WASR-10 hi-cap today in the shop and really wanted it, but I'd think I'd like the SAR better. What do you people think? Which has better qualities? And don't describe canting, as I already know what it is. And don't refer me to http://www.gunsnet.net/Linx310/index.shtml , because I've already been there. Thanks!!!

For the most part they are functionally identical. I own a WASR-10 hi-cap myself, just because that was what I found myself looking at one day.

WASR-10 advantages: Generally a bit less expensive. Supposedly less likely to have the canted sight issue.

WASR-10 disadvantages: Since it started life as a single-stack lo-cap rifle you are at the mercy of the Century Monkeys. Therefore you may have to make some modifications to fit some magazines. I know that even after some minor dremel work my WASR-10 still doesn't like some mags.

If you have the chance to examine it for sight cant, I would go with the SAR-1 if you have the chance, but I wouldn't be worried about it if you "only" get a WASR.

BTW, the web site you link to is a very valuable resource for SAR/WASR owners. Another good place for you to check would be the Romanian section of http://www.ak-47.net/

If you find a nice example of either at a good price I wouldn't hesitate to snag one. I went SAR1 since they were all over the place at the time, they are somewhat more scarce now, probably easier to find a nice WASR. All things being equal I'd get a SAR1 if possible, but there is nothing wrong with a WASR, it's all Century is offering anymore...

I've shot both, and I own a WASR-10. I voted for the SAR-1 just because it was designed for the high-caps. Having said that, I really don't think there's a nickel's worth of difference between the two. As long as the WASR accepts the high-caps and isn't some thumbhole-stock model.

Well, the WASR-10 I found had a canted sight slightly to the left. I don't want to have to dremel anything, because I'm 15 and don't know how. I also don't wanna make my Dad get one. But, the WASR-10 I found was in good condition and didn't have that evil thumbhole stock. Who would want one of those???

And I tried getting an account on ak-47.net, but I'm still awaiting the emai. Can anyone help me?

I voted SAR-1

The SAR-1 is a nice entry level AK...I still shoot that one more than my SSR-56 or SAM-7S.

They can be problem children as I'm sure you've read at the LINX310 site (keep going back there...great site!).

I bought a Kobra Red Dot...great fun.

I swapped out the slapping Century Trigger for a Gorden Tech from Tapco...ahhhhh...that's MUCH BETTER!

Still get a few jam's from time to time...I pulled the bolt apart and cleaned it real good...gonna' switch to Barnaul from Wolf for a little while and see how that works...

...just don't spend too much on a SAR-1, that's all. The Arsenal SLR101 double stack is probably the best value AK out there. If you can get a good deal on one...it may safe you some time and hassles...and money you would have spent on the SAR-1.
