Monday I was out looking for parts to repair the mower and stopped in a pawn shop under the theory of 'All work and no play....' I intended to look for Linux compatible printers but drifted over to the gun counter when that didn't pan out.

They have a Lyman Deerstalker, .54 percussion, looks new for $220.
They also have a Lyman Great Plains rifle, .54 percussion, left hand, looks like it sat in a closet for a while, for $130. There's a couple of small spots of surface rust on the barrel.

Now assuming you could shoot either of these, which would you get?

Get thee a little $10 bore light and drop it into the barrel of both. Buy the GPR if the bore is anywhere near smooth. If not, and the Deerstalker is very clean, buy it instead.

The bore light is a great idea! If the owner let rust happen on the outside of the barrel with it being easy to clean, what is on the inside? Not everyone cleans the right way,I found out the hard way by purchasing a used revolver on line,be careful.
