If you have seen my most recent thread about Remington 700 SA scope bases, I have decided on www.egw-guns.com for my mount, but I don't know which is better, plese tell me.

HD LOW mount- $69.99

-Machined from a solid bar of T6 7075 aircraft grade aluminum
-Full width cross slots, meets true Picatinny specifications
-Lower profile than are standard mounts
-Level III Mil-spec Hard coat anodizing
-Torx Plus Screws

STD picatinny EGW base- $39.99

-Extruded from 6061
-Channel down the center
-Level II anodized
-Hex head screws

I don't know what kind of maching is better or steel?

Thank you in advance,

Assuming they are made of the same type of steel, when torqued properly, they are equal.

It's pretty much up to the buyer's preference.

I've used both. Hex seems to have a little longer life if you remove/install/reuse them a lot.

Best bet is to always get a couple of spare screw sets when you get the bases and rings. Then you are covered.

Hex is six sided, like a standard allen wrench, sized in english or metric. 3/16, 1/4, 2mm, 3mm. Torx look like the spline on a driveshaft or wheel shaft inverted, 6 ridges and 6 valleys, sized by a "T" number. T10, T15, T20.

Ok, so would a Torx screw have repeatable torque?

Sorry for the dumb questions, mods can close this, someone could PM me since it's gotten off subject.

I'll will be buying the HD LOW mount.

Thanks,

The only difference is the shape of the bit. For a more common example, hex(Allen) is a hexagon, Torx is a six-sided star.

Torx was designed to take more torque at the head, but for a scope it makes no difference. Hex is much easier to find tools for.

The actual threads are the same, so repeatability is just fine for either.
