to alter? :D

For once, I'm not going to solve a problem by going out and buying another gun, but I'm going to change one I already own. I just sold my strictly turkey-hunting rig (Ithaca Turkeyslayer) and am downsizing. I'm mostly an upland hunter but go after Toms a few times a year. I'm down to a few that fit me and I shoot real well, or I can't get rid of due to being previously owned by a forebear.

Long story short, I've got to send a barrel off to get choke tubes installed. I've located several competent gunsmiths who can do this economicaly. Mike Orlen of Shotgunworld is probably going to get it.

The list:

Beretta 1200. 28" chrome bore, inertia system. Only shoots 2 3/4" shells. My grandfather loaned me this gun a long time ago. Shoulders and carries well, have used it often for other things and like it. Fixed mod barrel.

Savage 720: most of gun is US Ordnance marked except for the barrel, which is the only part I'm altering. Verisimilitude between it and my beloved A5's make it a top-contender. Fixed IC 26" bbl.

Browning A5: Belgium stalker with mod barrel. I've 2 in 12ga and 20ga, both 1967s. Both in 90% shape, I use these a lot for grouse, quail and clays. Just more carefully than the others. :uhoh:

I've also got a Al 48, but it's a 20 gauge that won't shoot 3" shells. Marginal at best.

I could use my LC/Fausti over under. George Trulock is sending me a xfull this week for it, but for some reason, I still want a 12 gauge auto with choke tubes. It would be easier to camo than the long-recoil guns.

Ideally a Japanese invector-choked 26" Magnum A5 would work, but I've yet to have one appear for a reasonable price. I could pick up a Mossy or other choked pump from the cheap shotty rack, but for once, I'm going to stand pat with what I've got.

Recommendations gentlemen?

Yeah, get a NEF single shot turkey gun. What does it cost to have the tubes put in, plus the cost of the tube set?

I really like fixed barrels, if they work for the gun's intended task (e.g. my IC/M over-under quail gun). Choke tubes are a pain to clean, a pain to get plastic gunk out of, and another thing you have to check before hunting.

That said, I have a box of Invectors for sale.:)

Could you find a seperate barrel for one of the above with screw in chokes and just do a barrel swap?

Or buy an extra barrel and have the chokes put in it and keep the original intact?

Just another option added to the pot.......

Used Invector barrels start at $325, Hasting no longer produces A5 barrels, not much luck on finding a 1200 bbl, and if you can find a Stevens 720/Rem 11 bbl that is chokeable, chances are it's got a polychoke on it. (Which ain't a half bad idea)

Orlen has a great rep.

The Beretta or the Savage. Were the Savage all original, I'd not say so.
