Why are green lasers so big?

Compare a red laser so small that it can replace the rear sight of a pistol:

To a green laser mounted on a pistol (smallest I can find):

Does it have something to do with electronics? Batteries?

Probably a generational production issue. As a newer product, it takes a few build iterations for manufacturers to micronize parts.

They should continue to reduce in size as newer models become available.

It's a generally accurate concept. The issue is generating a green laser takes a lot bigger "engine" to power it because the beam is stripped and filtered down for the one lightwave. it's not efficient at all compared to red - battery life is much less because of it.
