Why are revolver grips shaped the way they are?

Add my vote to Ruger's design. I loved the Hogue on my SP101, major improvement over traditional grip frame designs allowing more freedom for the aftermarket grip designers. See, thing about the revolver, even with traditional grip frames, you can CHANGE the grip angle or what not. You can't usually do much with a brass waster.

Thanks for all the responses. I'm eyeballing my first Ruger DA revolver-used to have a Super Blackhawk-I might get some wood and try playing around a bit, though I'm gonna try some cheap stuff first.
