Why aren't there more painted revolvers ... anyone have any painted revolver photos?

The frame of my 637 S&W revolver appears to be painted with some kind of clear coat. It is wearing off nicely giving the gun a bit of character.

Paint never lasts, even duracaot (not knocking it). I see two reasons to paint a gun and two reasons only.

1 - military sniper, break up weapon outline in surroundings.

2 - hunting in a harsh area, done correctly works very well to protect gun from environment and scratching. If done incorrectly helps the gun rust faster as the paint will trap moisture.

Revolvers will also have more of an issue with paint. Look at any revolver that has been used, you will see a small track line. This would be a point to where the paint would fail.

CriagC, I like the finish on your revolver (top) shown in THIS thread ... is it satin stainless done with a glass bead process? Now this is something I could live with for both of my GP100s.

Why are there any?

I'm just not a fan of bright, shiny stainless and merely tolerate brushed stainless steel. I have (or plan to) paint or grit blast every stainless rifle that I own. I prefer stainless steel over carbon steel for its increased resistance to corrosion but would rather have a finish such as the target gray from Ruger or the satin finish that CraigC has on the revolver shown in the other thread. If a coating system (or finish) can improve the corrosion resistance of a stainless steel firearm then I'm all for it.

I honestly didn't start this thread looking for anyone's approval. I don't make polls asking "what should I buy" or "what should I do". I definitely read EVERY post and combine the information presented and use that to make the best decision for ME.

I'm able to glass bead or grit blast firearms at work and have access to a paint booth and various ovens. This gives me quite a few options beyond merely sending my firearms out for "upgrades".

Not exactly a paint, but the Black-T treatment is what I'd go for if I wanted to refinish a working revolver. FBI Hostage Rescue team entry weapons are done by them. I recently had a stainless slide done and it is an amazing finish.

Black-T
