It's the best way to prop the gun up for a good picture, allowing natural looking lighting. That's the only reason. All the gun shops around here do the same thing with their hanguns in the cabinets.
 
It's called a triggerguard, and they simply do that for best photo quality.

Yep, just props it up. I see it with handguns, rifles at gunshows, auction pictures, etc. Have even used it myself in a few pics.

If you have ever tried to take a picture from directly above a gun with the light not hitting it correctly, you would quickly understand why you would want to prop it up. But, I like to use things you can't see, not a nasty ol' screwdriver!
