Great post Nicodemus38. I have also pondered the 30-30 win question. As a kid, a lot of the eastern woods deer hunters used 30-30's and quite successfully year in year out. Being a kid, I wanted something "better", so I chose a 270 win as my "deer hunting" caliber. I think it's better, but does it actually matter? Frankly, it only matters on long shots over 150 yds as far as I'm concerned and I have never taken a deer beyond 75 yds. So, does it really matter?

The Contender comment is right on. I consider them sort of a rifle handgun. The 30-30 from one is much less potent from a Contender than from a typical rifle. My hunting handguns are revolvers and I use a 41 mag or 480 Ruger for woods hunting for deer. I would have to check, but I suspect both are less potent than a 30-30 win fired from a rifle. However, I believe some of the hype and would feel safer with my 480 Ruger around dangerous game than your typical thirty-thirty.

How about a 22LR for self defense? :D Sorry folks, I just had to.
 
If someone tells you they're an expert, they're probably not. I tend to look at someone's results before I accept their advice.
 
why do we let some people set themselves up on soapboxes and spout forth words and make ourselves take it as "truth"?

I often wonder the same thing about gun forums but mostly with politics and religion. Check the facts, consider the source, and stay independent of "experts". Manipulators, con artists, and idiots come in many forms and show up at all levels of society.
 
its because of the age we live in and the ease of communicatibng to the masses. I wont mention that fancy nuts guy, but

most 'experts' keep me amused.
