Why should one have a light on the accessory rail?

It might not be a serious point, but it was in this case: I read about a cop who had a weaponlight. He drew his weapon on a violent felon, who apparently thought the officer was merely holding a flashlight. The officer woke up as to what was happening, as the guy smiled and started pulling something from under his shirt. The cop called out "Do you want to get shot?" Only then did the felon cease his aggression.

It's bad medicine to have a perpetrator say to the courtroom, "I would have stopped if only I had known it was a firearm."
