Why Shouldn't a Revolver Cylinder Be "Flicked" Closed?

I try not to get angry with my guns, I tend to enjoy them so I don't need to beat on em that much. I use some of them pretty hard......swinging the cylinder closed just seems like undue abuse.

Ya know, if it's done right then it's not a big deal. But doing it right means doing it gently. And folks that think it's cool don't tend to be the ones that do it gently.

But before anyone asks or suggests I'd better say that NO, I don't flick my revolvers closed.

For any that may think that it's odd that a gun can be fragile in this manner they need to consider that there's a lot of mechanisms and tools that can do amazing things and resist fantastic loads when used properly. Yet those same things are fragile if used or subjected to loads they were not originally intended to endure. When you think about it the pressure and forces that a firearm contains and directs is pretty amazing. Yet they are made to be compact and light. So it's no wonder that they have to give up something in other ways when it comes to loads or impacts from directions that were not planned for.

Flicking the cylinder ranks right in there with the "Russian Roulette" cylinder spin. The sound of that is like fingernails on a chalkboard to a revolver enthusiest.

It is often called the "Hollywood Close" (because that is where it originated). The main reason for you to not "flick" it closed (if it is someone else's revolver) is that I am sure you want to keep your arm usable and all your teeth in your head.......

:)

Alec did you say anything to him? Being an instructor he should have know better. At least you would think so anyway.

let's not get too irate, folks
everybody only learns from others, better from us than others
most will thank you if you explain it (been there, done that)

(unless they do it to your gun, in which case it's pretty much ok to punch 'em in the head, leastways if their gun ain't loaded)

Thanks oldfool. I can't believe this thread went to over 30 posts. Also find it strange that some posters think I actually flip the cylinder closed, when I've never held a revolver, ever.

This thread can be closed if it helps, since the question was long ago answered.
