A bunch of us just got back home a few hours ago from working the gun show in Antigo.
A year or two ago, we were met with yawns (or worse) when we talked about conceald carry for Wisconsin.
This weekend, we had a great crew of volunteers, and one of the best responses from gun show attendees I've seen in the last four years.
Why? Well, maybe Kartrina hit home the point that government can't always be there to help. Before 9/11, the interest in CCW for Wisconsn wasn't all that great. The weekend after, our volunteers couldn't keep up with the questions about how to get a permit and what gun to buy.
Whatever the reason, the call for shall-issue CCW in Wisconsin is louder than I've ever heard. Maybe that's why the media has started earlier than ever with their cooked-up statistics and just plain scare tactics.
I don't care.
We can win.
Before you nay-sayers say that it can't happen, consider this: the only reason we didn't get an override of Governor Doyle's veto in February of 2004 was that he was high in the polls.
Well, he ain't so high now.
If the authors of the bill can be convinced (and this is where you come in) to delay a veto override vote on CCW until late spring, when Doyle's campaign poll numbers will show weakness, he's vulnerable.
The Democrats who absolutely need an NRA "A" rating will look at Doyle's poll numbers, and think twice: hitch their star to a loser, or maintain the support they get from the NRA.
To that end, we need each and every one of you to work the gun shows and do other tasks. Easy work, and a big payoff in terms of CCW if we win.
Doesn't matter if you're a super-salesman or the shy type: we have a job for you. And you can put in however many hours you want to.
Please, folks: I'm seeing a great big opportunity ahead to override Doyle's veto. We just need the people to help.
If you want to help in any way--no matter how much or how little time you have available--please email me at [email protected]
I wouldn't be asking this if I hadn't seen a real sea-change this weekend. We did a show in Antigo, where interest in CCW has in the past been pretty moderate to mediocre. Instead, it was tremendous.
The folks have seen 9/11, and now they've seen Katrina. And they know that they're on their own.
Let's seize the moment. Give as much time as you can.
For 132 years, Wisconsinites have been prohibited from being able to defend themselves.
If you want to change it, you've got to help.
