I am new to this forum. I did not own any firearms previous to my father recently passing, and left me several guns, one being Winchester model 54 30-06 seriel #4935, from what I can tell it was manufactured in 1926. It has been modified with a Weaver Scope, and butt plate is red rubber, not the original metal plate. I will be selling this gun. I also have a S&W 38 Police Special revolver, Stainless Colt 22 revolver, Ruger Mark I 22 pistol.
Any interest or questions please reply.

The model 54 is a neat rifle. I have my grand dad's.

If you arrive at a price you think it is worth, PM me and send photos.

Regards,
Stubb

That SN would be a pretty early one. The unfortunate thing with Winchester 54's is that market value is nowhere near actual worth. The factory in New Haven is gone now, and that level of craftsmanship at the 54's price point is something we left behind in the 1930s. It's going to be tough to sell a rifle like that in the current market and not end up on the worse end of the deal.

Our condolences on the loss of your Dad.

I could not imagine selling my Father's (Mother's, Uncle's) guns, but then I am an enthusiast. If you don't care about them, sell them off. Do not offer them to a dealer, he will not pay much because he wants to make a profit and does not know how long it will take them to move. See if you can line up somebody who knows the gun auction www sites.

I won't guess on the resale value of the 54, but as modified, it is of less interest to a collector than it would be unaltered.

S&W does not make a "Police Special" revolver.
You might have a Military & Police or a Regulation Police, or a Chief's Special.

Nor does Colt make a stainless steel .22 revolver. Probably nickel plated, but any one of several models with widely differing values.

Post pictures and you will get a better handle on this stuff.

The .38 revolver is likely a Colt.

I also suggest that you keep your Dad's Winchester. You will not get much for it - it is drilled for a scope, the buttplate is missing and they are not valued by collectors (yet).

You will eventually regret selling your father's guns. If you are concerned about safety, you can buy an inexpensive small safe to store the handguns and the bolt of the Model 54.

If you are sure that you will never want his guns and decide to sell them, you can get a good idea of values by asking here on THR and also by checking out www.gunsamerica.com prices.

Do NOT sell to a gunshop. They will not give you anywhere near their value. Post here on the Trading post with pictures. The laws for gun sales vary by state, so check out your local laws, but in general you can sell directly to a person in your own state, but you must sell through a licensed dealer (FFL) if selling outside your state. The FFL will charge a fee of $10 - $100 and the buyer usually pays.

Post your state here and someone from your state will tell you the firearm sales laws.

Get out and shoot those fine guns!

Sorry you are right. the 38 is a Colt Police Positive, the 22 is a S&W 34-1 Nickle ,..sorry had them backwards. Thanks for the condolences. Dad died at 83, had a good life. Pancreas cancer, went in 23 days.
I have had the firearms in my house for 2 years now. Feel it's time to get rid of them. I can post pictures I have, but they are on my pc not a website.
I was offered $650 for the rifle when dad first died, wasn't sure if it was fair or not, but decided to wait. I can probably find a way to get pictures on the web.
I found the Ruger Mark I for around $200, the S&W 34-1 $575-600, the Colt Police Positive $329-399
and the Winchester Model 54 $950.
