Cops, prosecutors once again take aim at gun bill

Posted by: Bob von Sternberg under Gov. Mark Dayton, Minnesota legislature

Updated: May 12, 2011 - 10:29 AM

Minnesota's law enforcement establishment ramped up its opposition Thursday to a bill moving through the Legislature that would dramatically expand Minnesotans ability to use deadly force in self-defense without facing prosecution.

Gov. Mark Dayton has said he'll veto this, I wonder if it has veto proof majority?

You'd think the backers of this amendment would use this case happened yesterday as evidence that this bill would be wise.

Police say brazen robbers have struck again in Uptown, jumping a former Marine as he exited his car. The victim was armed and fired several shots.

Does anyone know if this is going to pass the Senate and House and have enough votes to be veto proof, since Governor Dayton appears to be willing to veto it?

.

I don't know about Veto proof with dumb comments like these -

"Sen. Terri Bonoff, DFL-Minnetonka, repeated law enforcement fears, adding, "I'm concerned we're increasing violence in our communities."

But I sure hope there's enough votes.... Heck, I'm suprised we got "right to carry" in the first place. My local rep is behind it 100% and is also on the committee, but I havent heard how strong the support is in the legislature.

Now it's up to the Senate. I hope it passes with enough votes to be veto-proof.

A bill expanding rights to use deadly force in self-defense situations cleared the Minnesota House on Saturday evening. .....The full Senate is expected to take up its version of the bill later this week.

It got it's second reading on Tuesday, but hasn't been put on the calender yet AFAIK. I could come up any time.

I remember back when he was running for gov, one of Dayton's campaign people called and tried to tell me he supported gun rights.

I told him that was a lie.

I wonder if I'll be right.

""I remember back when he was running for gov, one of Dayton's campaign people called and tried to tell me he supported gun rights."" copied from post #13

Just remember that 'gun rights' have all kinds of different meanings just like CHANGE.
People wanted change-now we are getting it.

Many think gun rights refer to pheasant or deer hunting with whatever gun is on the 'approved' list.

Nope, no movement at all. The special session is about the budget, I doubt they'll bother with something like this. If it was really a priority, they'd have already brought it up, they had time this week. :(

Dang, billl killed because the GOP didn't bring it up this session. Perhaps next session?

Gun Rights group takes aim at Senate GOP

The gun rights group, The Gun Owners Civil Rights Alliance, is taking aim at Republicans in the Minnesota Senate for not taking up a bill that would change when it's legal for a person to shoot someone in self defense.
