I found a Win model 50 12ga (2 3/4) with vent rib that's dated 1963 for $550. A gunsmith owns it and the shotgun is in superior condition. The barrel is fixed mod.

Is it worth $550?

If so, is it worth getting the barrel tapped so I can use different choke tubes?
Would that take away any value of the shotgun?

Plan to use it for clay, grouse, dove, maybe duck.

No good deal ,,,,even if the Barrel has a factory rib...and gun is Trap grade....then $550 would still be top dollar....

The Standard Catalog of Firearms shows the Model 50 as Poor $150, Fair $200, Good $300, Very Good 400, abd Exc. as $500.

Note the prices are for a standard grade with plain or vent rib barrel. A checkered stock and forearm in plain walnut. Barrels were 26" to 30".

Please note this is from the 2009 edition and prices will varry as to location, collector intrest, and the economy at the time (economy down, price down).

The price of $550 it would have to be new in the box unfired!!!

If I wanted a gun to shoot, I would not buy a Model 50.
If I wanted a one of every Winchester collection, I would buy a Model 50.

IMO: Winchester never quite made a really good semi-auto shotgun until the mid-1960's gas-operated Model 1400 came along.

The model 50 uses the old Carbine Williams floating chamber to get it to work.
Most of the time.

Plus, parts are getting very hard to find if you eventually need them.

I decided not to buy it. Thanks guys for the advice. I will keep my hopes on a Rem 1100 or 1187.

Thanks.

If I remember correctly the Model 50 had a fiber barrel. Not threadable for tubes.

Price is too high you did the right thing by passing on it.

That was the Model 59 with Win-Lite fibreglas barrel. It was factory threaded for choke tubes, but probably not the same as the later Win-Choke.

model 50

If the gun is in near perfect condition with factory vent rib and mod choke please give me the contact information. I'll buy it for that price. I think they are fine autoloaders, simple to maintain, and they fit me well. would make a good sporting clays gun.

Tom, do you mean to say that there's one classic shotgun you do not already own an example of?

Once in a blue moon......

model 50

Well Dave you know partial I am to good winchester shotguns and I've never found a good model 50 with a vent rib and have a empty slot in the vault that looks lonely. Tom

sent you pm with contact info.

Sounds like good enough reason to me, Tom. I admit surprise there's an empty slot in the vault(s)....

I've shot a few 50s and 59s here and there. Decent shotguns but they do not set me on fire.

Some Winchester that do ignite my jets that I do not own yet include Model 12s and maybe a 42, an X1 and a Model 23 like yours.

Maybe someday....

I've had a model 50/59 hybrid for over fifty years, have hunted and shot trap for decades with it. I can count on one hand the number of times it has jammed or failed to fire. The only downside is it isn't steel shot compatible but I quit hunting waterfowl when that became mandatory anyway, so it doesn't matter to me. I still shoot it and love it, no reason to get anything more modern, none of the parts look like they have any wear on them after many, many thousands of rounds.

BTW, there was only one type of the Win-Lite barrel equipped to mount Win Chokes and it was at (or near) the end of the Model 59 production. The standard barrels for the 59 are without removable chokes.

The Model 50 was discontinued in 1961 so if that guy said 1963 he has his date off.
