I have a pre 64 win model94 there is no spring tension on the hammer when in the fired postion, should there be? very little at the half cock postion and plenty at the full cock, is this correct? I am going to shot it to see if it has enough power to fire it tomarrow. If I need to replace the mainspring how do I do it? also need to replace the rear sight, do I just punch it out of the dove tail?

The hammer spring is held in by a screw on the bottom tang . (just forward of the stock screw) I'm thinking that you may just have a loose spring screw and tightening will cure your problem.

If the spring needs replacing you remove the stock bolt from the tang and remove the butt stock - the flat hammer spring is held in by a single screw coming up through the bottom tang . Not a hard job to do.

Drive the rear sight out from left to right . When replacing tap it back into position with something non marring like a soft brass punch.

yep, previous owner decided to loosen that screw for what ever reason, it was not attached to the spring at all. works great now thanks
