win. mod 100 last rnd. bolt closes

howdy all, new member and first post. I've aquired a Win. mod. 100 in .308. Old and rugged but reasonably clean. After finding a reproduction mag for it (OUCH) and solving an extraction problem(fouled/scratched chamber)I now am at the last minor booboo the previous owners inflicted on it. The bolt will not remain open after the last round is fired or when hand cycled unless the rear of the mag is pushed up slightly to engage the lower bolt lug. I think someone got rough with the trigger asembly(attempted to remove it from the bottom) and bent the lower rails slightly downward at the rear of the asem. as they do not run parallel to the operating rods directly above them,especially at the rear of the trig.asem. If my assumption is correct, dose anyone have an idea of how i might straighten them? Or might it be possible/eaiser to brase or silver solder the rear notch of the mag. catch slot a bit and hand file it to give the additional rear lift needed. Please excuse the long winded account but i try to give any info that might be useful for anyone that might respond. Thanks in adv. DrBob762.

While you are working on it, check it to see whether the firing pin was replaced with the updated version.

I have a Win Mod 100 in 308 too, it's my hog gun. If I recall there were several versions of magazines for these guns. I do know the bolt hangs on the mag follower to lock it back. So if it's too short or rounded you will have issues.

Thanks to JHONBT the site u refered me to had all the answers to my problems. I went to the range yesterday and put approx. 60 rnds. through the Win. 100(150/180 Rem. corelock) and had about 7 failure to feed due to the bolt riding over the rear of the cart.and not picking it up.Outher than that it preformed well and seemed to prefer the 180 grain feed better with 1.5/.5 inch groups in the final 25 rnds.(scope dialed in and me settled down to be able to shoot straight at 100 yds)The artisle u noted addresed the trigger ass.rails as being bent and that confirmed my thoughts on the possible cause of the F.T.F and Bolt closed on last round situation. Now any ideas on how to correct this situation effictivly? I dont belive the firing pin has been updated as there are no marks or letters in the underside of the bolt to indicate who had done it. Any good leads on were I can purchase them and replace them myself? I dont care for the expence,time and uncerntanty of sending stuf out. I was able to obtain the firing pin direct from the source. It has been about 25 years, so I don't remember any details.

Our Gun Club President had a Win 100. It slamfired. He got the upgraded firing pin and it still slamfired.

Make sure that you use the least sensitive primers on the market, that is CCI #34's or Tula 7.62. These are advertized as mil spec. Do not use Federals, the most sensitive primer on the market or any match or benchrest primer, as these have thin cups.

I would also recommend you small base size your cases and set up your sizing die with a Wilson type cartridge cartridge headspace gage.

I can attest to the M100 doubling while benchresting the rifle. I have to load it single shot when dialing it in for POI.

You may have a Winchester Model 88 magazine. They will both work in either firearm but only the one originally made for the model 100 has the bolt stop feature. chig

thanks for the input CHIG. I cant 100% say that it's a mod.100 mag, but if I push up slightly on the rear of the mag. the F.T.F and bolt closed problem goes away completely. I got to look at anouther one about four days ago and can confirm that the trigger ass. rails are bent down toward the rear(trigger) end causing the mag. catch at the rear of the mag. to be too low to allow the follower unit in the mag to rise high enough to engage the bolt and lock it to the rear. Now i need to find a way to make them right agan. I'm thinking about two thick steel plates to sandwich the rails between and press them straight and parallel to each outher. DrBob762.

The magazines are two different animals. Not only are the rails different the follower is also. Top picture: The top is model 88 with model 100 on bottom. Bottom picture : The Left is model 88- right is model 100. Maybe this will help. Chig

Thanks for the pics. CHIG. Really app. the responces to this thread. I wasent verry clear about what rails were bent, the trigger assembly rails that house the mag. catches are the ones that are bent, in my case bent down slightly about mid-way along their length toward the trigger guard end. This apparently changes the positioning of the mag. and bolt enough to allow the bolt to over-ride the mag. follower on the last round and allow the bolt to close and/or over-ride a live round and result in a failure to feed situation. Now i guess its a matter of devising an effictive method of putting it all back in allignment without doing any moore damage. Im guessing someone tried to remove the trigger ass. from the bottom not knowing it dosent work that way... at least not verry well. Thanks again.... DrBob.
