I found this on the Brownells 38-55 order page questions and answers:
"I recently received a bag of these and they measured between 2.077-2.080". I needed the shorter brass to feed thru my Winchester model 94. I previously used the Starline brass and they are so thin that many of them would buckle at one spot during bullet seating. I'm hoping the Winchester brass are a little bit more sturdy.miketheaussiedoglover from Porterville, CA"
Someone else had asked your exact question there also!
I measured a piece of Peters 38-55 that I shot my deer with last year. It is at least 50 years old and my old dial caliper said 2.110, I shot this in my '93 Marlin.
From page 83 of the 1970 Gun Digest book:
The 38-55 cartridge consist of a case length of 2.128 which should be kept trimmed to a uniform measurement of about 2.118.
Hope this is helpful.
