I enjoy January because, with SHOT coming up, the manufacturers release their new line-ups for the year. I was just scanning the Winchester (FNH's Winchester) website to see if they had put up the new models. It looks like they have, at least in part.
Now, my gun safe line-up is pretty complete for the shooting disciplines I participate in...but I can usually find a reason to add to it. I'm also a guy who was born just 65 years after the Gunfight at the OK Corral, so I find myself fascinated by retro-type calibers, guns and the like. Winchester has announced it will produce a Mod. 70 Extreme Weather in .300 H&H...a caliber that I've always wanted to try. I love the .375 H&H and had basically decided to either find or build a .300 H&H. Now Winchester is going to make one...a nice little step up from .30-06 and, as proved a while back at Creedmor, a nice 1,000 yard cartridge. I was looking forward to 1,000 yard shooting this coming season with a couple of my rifles...this looks like another way to spend weekends.
I am also planning to ramp up my CAS shooting this year...I've only done a couple of matches in the past and enjoyed them and, having been gifted from a little consulting work with some funds, had acquired a pair of Uberti Rem 1875s in .45 Colt that I was planning to use to replace my Old Style Vaqueros. Now I see that Winchester has announced a Mod. 1873 rifle chambered in .44 WCF and a Mod. 1892 chambered in .45 Colt...what to do, what to do? I've used a Uberti replica 1873 Win in the past in .45 Colt but have wanted to try .44-40...now I can do the real thing. I've always liked the 1892...again, what to do, what to do?
Finally, we'll know in about three weeks what AI is gonna do to replace the AE MkIII, and I noted my desire to stretch my shooting this year at a not-completely-local but easily accessible 1,000 yard range. Too, Cabela's sells a nice Pedersoli 1874 Sharps replica that will be a pisser for BPCR silhouette shooting...with old-style scope or tang sights.
Being old and having adult children who are successful in their own right, I may just spend part of their inheritance on my hobbies...and my 12 y/o SUV is still running well as are my somewhat geriatric reloading presses. Life is good...and happy new year to all! I think I'll pour a glass of elderly Scotch and sit in my easy chair and contemplate how to enjoy my declining years.
