I enjoy January because, with SHOT coming up, the manufacturers release their new line-ups for the year. I was just scanning the Winchester (FNH's Winchester) website to see if they had put up the new models. It looks like they have, at least in part.

Now, my gun safe line-up is pretty complete for the shooting disciplines I participate in...but I can usually find a reason to add to it. I'm also a guy who was born just 65 years after the Gunfight at the OK Corral, so I find myself fascinated by retro-type calibers, guns and the like. Winchester has announced it will produce a Mod. 70 Extreme Weather in .300 H&H...a caliber that I've always wanted to try. I love the .375 H&H and had basically decided to either find or build a .300 H&H. Now Winchester is going to make one...a nice little step up from .30-06 and, as proved a while back at Creedmor, a nice 1,000 yard cartridge. I was looking forward to 1,000 yard shooting this coming season with a couple of my rifles...this looks like another way to spend weekends.

I am also planning to ramp up my CAS shooting this year...I've only done a couple of matches in the past and enjoyed them and, having been gifted from a little consulting work with some funds, had acquired a pair of Uberti Rem 1875s in .45 Colt that I was planning to use to replace my Old Style Vaqueros. Now I see that Winchester has announced a Mod. 1873 rifle chambered in .44 WCF and a Mod. 1892 chambered in .45 Colt...what to do, what to do? I've used a Uberti replica 1873 Win in the past in .45 Colt but have wanted to try .44-40...now I can do the real thing. I've always liked the 1892...again, what to do, what to do?

Finally, we'll know in about three weeks what AI is gonna do to replace the AE MkIII, and I noted my desire to stretch my shooting this year at a not-completely-local but easily accessible 1,000 yard range. Too, Cabela's sells a nice Pedersoli 1874 Sharps replica that will be a pisser for BPCR silhouette shooting...with old-style scope or tang sights.

Being old and having adult children who are successful in their own right, I may just spend part of their inheritance on my hobbies...and my 12 y/o SUV is still running well as are my somewhat geriatric reloading presses. Life is good...and happy new year to all! I think I'll pour a glass of elderly Scotch and sit in my easy chair and contemplate how to enjoy my declining years.

I just shot my new 1873 in .357 Mag today. It was a joy to shoot. Most fun I've had at the range in a while. With a .44-40 1873 and a .45 LC 1892, Winchester/FNH is going to be seeing way more of my money than I was planning on in 2014......

Winchester still makes some great lever guns. My Miroku made Winchester 1886 Extra Light is by far my favorite firearm I have ever owned. Wicked accurate and very handy all around. I don't think you can go wrong with one of the levers.

A Sharps rifle is also on my short list.

Count me in as another lever action fan who would be very interested in a Winchester/FNH Model 92 in .45 Colt.

Harry,

If you are serious about 1,000 yard shooting with the .300 H&H, the .30-06 is actually a better choice. Reason? Readily available high quality brass (Lapua), plus with the right powder you can safely load the .30-06 to duplicate the factory Federal Gold Medal Match .300WM load, which exceeds factory .300 H&H ammo. I shot the .30-06 in 1,000 yard F Class competition for 3 years with the 190SMK and found it to be an excellent choice, other than recoil.;)

I'm thrilled to hear about the .300 H&H, it is a great caliber that has been all but forgotten. I have a 700 Classic chambered in it and can't say one bad thing about it. Should be interesting to see how many sell.

Don,

Thanks for this response. I actually love the .30-06 and would try a build with it for F-class using either my Savage 116 action or a Win M70 LA or Rem 700 LA as the donor. Also, I have a nice Rem 700 5R in an AIAX chassis with a NightForce 3.5-15x56 that I'm planning to try. I've got a nice 175gr SMK load and I'kk be trying to develop good 190gr SMK and Berger VLD loads for that rifle at that distance. I'll be shooting at the CO Rifle Club which has great facilities, good matches and great members.

I've got a soft spot for old cartridges and the .300 H&H would be more of a nostalgic-type hunting rifle, if I go that route. I would appreciate your data on the 190gr >30-06 load to see how it does in my existing rifles.

Again, thanks and best wishes for the new year.

Cheers,

Harry

Here you go, Harry:

Lapua .30-06 brass.
Sierra 190gr MatchKing bullet.
Fed. 210M primer.
60.7gr RL22 powder.
2900fps from my 26" Krieger barrel.
30.5 MOA from a 100 yard zero to 1k.

Dunno why, but a Sporter in 300H&H just calls to me.
I've owned one for 13 years and love that cartridge. Brass lasts forever and rarely needs trimming. I never once wished I had something bigger on any hunt I used it on.

Really happy to see them offering the 1873 in something other than .357Mag or .45Colt. Now I want one!

Had an 1892 .45Colt but sold it.
