Gentlemen,
I have a M92 Win 44WCF Half-Magazine carbine (cannot vouch for the originality of the configuration, but it looks original), SN 327,3XX with a gum-wood forend & shotgun butt made in 1906. It has been refinished at least twice (once by me) but all markings are sharp & legible. Over the chamber on the barrel is a marking "DXC but the "X" is a pair of crossed pennants or semaphores. Anyone have any idea the meaning of it, if any? I bought it off a warrant officer I worked with on the 18th Abn Corps Marksmanship Unit in 1973; other than that I have no info on its history.

According to Numrich the crossed flags might be a "Dominion of Canada" proof for selling to an Indian Reservation or for other 'government use'.

The flags are 'lances' and its a variation of the British GxR (George Rex, King George) proof mark.

Are their other 'British' looking proofs and marks?

Dr Rob,
No other markings I can recall off hand - I'll get it out tomorrow & go over it. That sounds like it could be something to consider. I believe I recall being told it was a government marking, but never had any thing concrete. Nice rifle, shiny bore with only a few scattered very light pits. It's a tack driver with the right load, and the slickest, tightest 92 I've ever seen (and I've had a few & handled a lot of them). Interesting. I will dig it out & report back, and see if I can get a decent pic with my mediocre camera.
