Just bought one of these today at the pawn shop. It has a 28 inch 12 ga Winchoked barrel and appears to be in good shape. I plan on keeping it choked full and using it for trapshooting at my local shotgun range. Anybody here ever own one and if so did they have any reliability problems with them? This one I got sure seems to cycle much smoother than any of my 870's. Only time will tell if this thing can stand the abuse of numerous 1 1/8 oz 7.5 trap loads at the trap range. Someone told me that his 870 went 250,000 rds before the receiver cracked and it was time to retire it.

They feel good, and seem to shoot good. I shot waterfowl with one with 3" loads and did well, but it kicked a little more due to the lighter weight. You may want to invest in a good recoil pad for lots of target shooting. A lot of them have experienced component failures. Winchester went too cheap with the 1200, made some improvements with the 1300, then made some more with the Speed Pump, and FN supposedly have made some more still with the current Turkish sourced SXP. A bunch of people will come along and tell you it is great, and they have never had a problem, but that doesn't change history one bit. I did not say they were all bad, just that a too high percentage were. I hope you got a good one and enjoy it for a long time in good health.
The Mossberg and Remington designs have been virtually unchanged for over half a century for good reason. I have seen plenty of 870s that have gone well over 300,000 rounds and are still going. Can't speak to Mossbergs because they just aren't as popular with target shooters that I have encountered. The only 870 receiver I have ever seen cracked developed a crack where the receiver wall was paper thin and almost worn thru where one of the action bars was bowed out and it had something close to 300,000 rounds thru it, according to the owner. He had finally broken down and bought another action tube and was still banging away with it.

i bought a 1300 win. 3" mag turkey shotgun years ago for a bad weather shotgun, i have killed alot of turkeys with it and the only down side it that it kicks like the devil. i only have about 200 rounds thru it as i only use it for bad weather turkey hunting. eastbank.
