All of those "character" marks folks here are bragging about will be used against your friend to lower his asking price when he decides to sell it. All cleaning the rust off it means it now has bare metal to rust.

The gun is far from rare with several million made. a future buyer might put more value on a hunting rifle that can truly withstand being in the wet outdoors especially in a hunting camp for several days without fear of rusting.

I see no reason not to do with it what he wants.

If he does coat the gun,pay close attention to the tightly fitting parts.anything that fits tight now will fit even tighter after coating,don,t count on letting the gun work itself loose it will bind up.you can use masking tape to cover the area you need too.

Bronze wool, fine, and oil. Go easy and get to know the look of it before you destroy the history in its skin.
