Hi all-
I was over at a neighbor's house today and he wanted to show me a few old firearms - very cool stuff I'd never seen before.

Anyway, one of them was an old Winchester .30 cal revolver. Does anyone know of a resource to look up the serial number for that? I found the sites for rifles and shotguns - those are well-documented. I haven't found anything for looking up the serial number on a revolver.

Any information is greatly appreciated.

Winchester .30 caliber revolver ... what the ------
Honestly I never heard of this. Winchester is not known to make handguns. They had a very brief and very short excursion into handguns in the 19th century but they weren't .30 caliber.

Hello friends and neighbors /// My book does not list revolver serial numbers and only lists two revolvers.

1) the 1876 DA revolver/ William Wetmore and Stephen W.Wood pat. issued 1877, no chamberings listed. winchester-revolvers2.jpg (NOT my pic don't know who to credit)
"A bit more than a dozen specimens.... in museums and private collections."

2) the 1883 William Mason revolver listed chamberings .44-40, .44 and .38 , no numbers of manuf. listed.

Only one book lists revolvers, very nice find congrats to your friend.

You might want to look at it again.

To my knowledge, Winchester only made a very few revolvers in the 1870's-80's, and none in .30 cal.

They would have probably been in 44 cal, and were produced to discourage Colt from making lever-action rifles in direct competation with them.

Post a good photo and somebody can help you figure out what it is.

I'm plan to take photos this week. I will keep you posted.

Note: my wife was laughing at me because I kept wanting to discuss the revolver long after the conversation moved on.

Thanks!

I've heard this before and every time it has simply been confusion. For the most part it steams from a gun stamped Winchester cartridge as many European guns did at one time. Did he act as if he had ammo for it and do you know if it was actually stamped a 30 caliber?
