Winchester "Winclean" .45 brass

Gather this stuff is not reloadable???? Large pistol primers do not seem to go back into the primer pockets. I always use Federal primers in all my reloading without any difficulties.

Headstamp reads "Winchester NT".

I bought this as factory ammo in 230 grain.

Anyone have any experience with this brass??

You sure about using regular 'ol small pistol primers in this brass?

I never heard of a .45 ACP that uses small primers instead of large ones.

Didn't really seem to get a consensus.:confused:

I am leaning towards chucking it just because my Dillon set up for .45 is based on large pistol primers. I suppose I could make the primer swap on the reloader, but it is still a pain in the arse as all my other .45 brass is large pistol primer.

It's fully reloadable with small pistol primers. Save it up and make a batch of it when you get enough to make it worthwhile. I've been loading it ever since it first came out about 5 years ago or so. They have loaded .45 acp in Europe with small pistol primers for years, and it works just fine.

It used to be that .38 Special was loaded with large pistol primers, and people thought it would never work with small pistol primers. So much for that theory. The same with .357 Magnum when it first came out.

The Winchester and Federal and Speer NT brass is all fully reloadable, but you may have to remove primer crimps, the same as military brass.

NT brass works great! But, with a progressive press,I'd be carefull not to mix it up:cuss:
 
It averages about 5% slower - only relevant if you're using it in a power factor match. Reloads fine.

i save a bunch of 45acp small primer and trade it to someone who prefers it for another caliber or large primer 45acp. you might want to do the same if you, like me, don't feel like doing the primer switch.

that being said, i've done a few for novelty factor. it does indeed work fine.
 
I thought just "NT" was small primer. I bought some Speer brass off e-bay (from a highly rated seller) and 629 of the 1,000 were small primer. That was kind of a surprise. I shipped them back and he shipped me 1,000 R-P. I guess I'm out the postage to send them back, though.

I get all my 45 brass off the range and have to watch for Winchester NT. I was going to ask if any other 45 brass uses the small primers. Of the 1500 cases I've accumulated. I only found about a dozen NT cases so have thrown them in the scrap brass bucket.

I'm just glad my press gives me good feel when setting the primer as I found out about 45 cases with small primers by trying to load the large primer in it. I then had to go through several hundred cases that I hadn't reloaded yet at the time and cull them out :rolleyes: .

The speer headstamps I've found were all large primer as well as all the other stuff (except win NT). What did the headstamp on the speer look like? Did it have that NT designation also?

Nope, the Speer did not have an NT on them (I think that's probably a Winchester trademark?) The headstamp looked the same on both the large and small primer Speer cases.

Okay....

I reloaded the Winchester NT .45 brass.

What a pain in the a**, especially since I only had 95 pieces of brass! It was like loading brand new brass. Brass would hang up on the powder die. Had to wipe some Hornandy One Shot case lube on the outside of the powder die every third or fourth round otherwise it would stick like crazy. Normal once fired brass has a nice coating of burnt powder on the inside which seems to act as a lubricant (this brass did not).

The small pistol primers worked as everyone said they would. (although it was a pain to switch primer sizes on my loader which is set up for "normal" .45 acp)

Oh well...had nothing better to do today.

Here is my recipe.

Brass: Winchester .45 NT
Bullet: Zero 185 gr. LSWC (lubed)
Primer: Federal Match small pistol
Powder: 4.3 grains Clays
OAL:1.256
Crimp: .465

Will try it out soon!

Well ReloaderFred...Guess we won't get any of that brass...:(

cbmax. I don't use a progresive so I wouldn't have the problem you were having and changing to the small primer system is a breeze with Lee turret and Auto Prime II.:D
