Live near the storm and want to have a little fun? …Go shooting! I did a pretty fair amount of shooting Friday through the weekend. Friday’s conditions were normal ~1 to 5mph winds. Saturday and Sunday was a totally different story! Yesterday, 15mph was the norm with gusts around 30. For those that live out west, that’s probably nothing special, but around here, it’s not typical. Just thought I’d suggest having a little fun with it. If you're in the path of the storm, stay safe.

yep! i travel to shoot in the wind...

i took this screenshot from my iphone at john boyette's match at camp butner during Irene.

i also shot the GAP Grind this weekend in florida. winds were predicted to be 20-30mph sunday and were a disappointing 15-25mph but gusty and constantly changing direction

yep, a typical day in the desert out West will bring 10 to 15 mph winds. I usually have to hold 1 MIL dot minimum at 220 yards to keep zero.

This time of year we get more calm days than other times of the year. On days like this morning, there is no breeze, meaning there is also no sound.

Contrast this when we have wind storms with blowing dust and accurate shooting can/is an issue. A number of years ago I decided to test my shooting accuracy during a wind storm as others have posted. A M70/300WSM loaded with 165gr SSTs/3100fps is what went out into the blowing dust with winds gusting. At 110 yards I finally had to position myself behind a tractor and push my shoulder against a rear tire in order to hold on target, with 5"-6" horizontal hold, I was able to get hits in the red.

Glad to hear many of you who came through Sandy are safe. :)

Last weekend I went shooting in the wind. I was shooting a Ruger Hawkeye in 25-06 with the wind in my face. Suprisingly I was hitting milk cartons up to 250 yards easily. I then decided to break a 4" sized rock at the same distance just for fun.:p

Funny, last night when the wind was really kicking up (my neighbor clocked a gust at 64 miles per hour) I was wondering just how shooting directly into a high wind would affect the flight of the bullet. Would a .30'06 hit high or low at 100 yards?
