wood on White Oynx Beretta?

...read in reviews on the Net that lots did not like this and it some referred to it as ugly plastic. What's with that? From the Beretta web cite it looks like the wood has a gloss finish which I do not favor.

...looking to buy a 20 GA. to "match" my 12 from circa mid-1990s.
 
You may be reading reviews on the discontinued "onyx pro" with "xtra wood" stocks. They are walnut beneath with a plastic laminate over the top to make it look like more expensive fancy grade stuff. Some like it, some don't. Here's mine:

The wood I've seen on the $1500-$2000 Berettas has generally been nice, satin finished
 
1K - my understanding was the grain enhancing was much like someone took a magic marker and highlighted the grain, then they applied some poly-type finish over it to protect it. You're saying the stock has a laminate over it, including the checkering?
 
I'll look it up if I have time, but my understanding is that they used to have the Xtrawood and now they have the Xtragrain.

The first was veneer and the second was laser-induced dark grain lines.
