I've finally gone and done it. I've always felt that the standard AK sights were poor at best and that they were the greatest limiting factor to the gun. Well, anyway, I looked and looked and couldn't find anyone making a suitable set of aftermarket sights for them, so I set out to have made what I consider to be an appropriate set of sights for close range defensive use of the rifle.

First, I looked at the front sight. Not much available for an AK that works any better than the standard issue post, at least that's what I thought until I found out that Ace Limited was making a windage slide that would take M16/AR15 sight posts. So I fitted an XS Sight Systems Big Dot Round Top Tritium AR15 front sight post to an Ace windage slide. Very easy to pick up.

Next, I looked at the various aperture sights that could replace the standard rear. I don't care for aperature sights mounted that far forward on the receiver. In my opinion, an aperture sight (whether of conventional (ie small hole) design or ghost ring) needs to be placed as close to the shooters eye as practical to get the best results. But I did like to design of the Mojo Sights rear. So a couple of e-mails and a phone call or two later and Mr. Jones agreed to make me a rather unique rear sight. It's a half ghost ring rear, giving a fat U-shaped rear sight picture.

The sight picture will look kind of like an egg (the Big Dot front) sitting in a nest (the half ghost ring rear). I haven't gotten the rear sight in yet, but as soon as it arrives I'm swapping the sights out and heading to the range.

I'll post pics, if anyone is interested, once the various peices are all in one place.

Absolutely post those pics! Been looking for a good solution to this problem. Did you take a look at the ACE LTD. rear sight that they make now? Replaces the standard AK rear leaf with a AR A2 style rear sight.

Have you examined the sight design on the Sako/Valmet family? The sort I'm familiar with have an aperture sight mounted at the rear edge of the receiver lid and a windage adjustable square front post in a circle.

The trick is, the rear sight can be flipped 180 degrees forward to reveal a conventional notch-style rear sight - with tritium dots. The sight radius still exceeds the usual AK measure by close to 20cm. The front sight post also has a doppelganger that can be flipped up, IIRC a bit wider than the normal post, also with a tritium dot. This gives enough alternatives for most situations.

If I could afford a Sako 92, I'd drill the aperture a bit bigger for more of a ghost ring effect - as is, it's a pretty tight dioptic picture one has to achieve.

Igor,

Yep, I'm familiar with the Valmet/Sako rear sight (and the Galil rear sight for that matter) both are vastly superior to standard AK sights, but both are, also, rarer than hens-teeth around here. The Valmet/Sako variants of the AK are some of the nicest ever made, but they never were very popular in the US because they didn't fit the AK stereotype and nowadays you'll pay through the nose for one.

7.62,

I looked at the Ace rear sight assembly, but it didn't really do anything for me. I like my peep sight further back and my "scout" mount further forward than the Ace unit allows. I'm planning to look at one of the Ultimak forward mounts for the AK to mount a Trijicon Reflex or an EO Tech over the gastube.
