I was in my local gunshp and saw a brand new S&W 640 3 inch barrel with white grips, in .357. ( I may have the model wrong) The front sight was set back to about the 2 inch mark and the barrel was ported...The only issue is that there is a great big confederate flag engraved on the right side of the frame....living in NY, that is probably a big no no in a court of law if I was involved in a shooting with a minority.

Since my great grandfather served with the 3rd Georgia regiment during the "war of Northern Aggression" as that side of the family puts it, such a gun would honor the man. Definitely would no honor the one with the 105th NY that got his big toe shot off at Gettysberg.

Would you or would you not buy this gun? I think I could get it a t a decent price as it has been sitting tjhere for 2 years now.

Sure. If you think it's a good gun and the big flag on the side doesn't bother you, buy it. It's a tool, nothing more, nothing less, unless you want it to be.

If you ever do end up in court, use this thread as exonerating evidence. You don't seem like a vigilante racist to me. :)

I would go for it... I have stopped worrying about racial issues. no matter what you do someone out there is going to think you hate them because of the way they look, consequently, they will hate you.(go figure) anyway.. as far as the gun goes, you seem to like it, if your only reservation for buying it is the flag on the side, no doubt youwill regret not getting it..

speaking from a voice in the south, you will probably be able to sell it off down here pretty easily... Southerners have a lot of pride in history... controversial or not...

Racist ideas aren't going anywhere any time soon...UNFORTUNATELY.... however, in a way, if you allow a engraving, that you seem to appreciate, to deter you, you only feed the fire.. buy it or find another reason not to..

I dont mean this to sound in any way harsh, but this topic always hits a nerve with me..

We have a bumper sticker available from the Sons of Confederate Veterans, that says "Heritage not Hate" ( you should qualify for membership.)
The war of northern aggession ( or the war for southern independence)
was not about solely about slavery. It was about State rights, free trade,
Urban vs rural, and less federal govt. (sound familiar)
Honor the brave men that came befor you and buy that thing!

I'd buy it if the price is right and put the bumper sticker on your car that bikerdoc mentioned, that should cover all your bases

I'm no racist (couple of different ethnicities represented in my family, so I didn't even understand the concept growing up) but I am proud of the brave southerners who went before me. I'd snatch up that revolver in a heartbeat -- if nothing else because, though some people don't like it -- the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia is a piece of American history. Maybe you could find one with a Union Jack on it and have a matched set. :)

If I was in a state to where people would instantly assume that the flag meant "racist", I would look into potentially getting it removed; that being said, it wouldn't keep me from snapping up a good tool at a good price, if it was a deal on something I wanted.

If you're really worried about the flag, and might send it somewhere to get it "taken care of," maybe look into alternative decorative finishes while you're at it? Kill two birds with one stone.

FYI, your choice to privately own a firearm will always offend people, regardless of whether there is a swastika on your gun, a confederate flag, or a litter of puppies snuggling a rainbow.
