Forgive me if this has been covered, but a search did not give me an answer. I am about to begin using my RCBS X-die for .223 and find an apparent inconsistency in the instructions. I have read other threads on the x-die and the instructions. The max case length for .223 is 1.760", and the trim length is 1.750". If I am supposed to trim 0.02 less than max case length for the x-die, that will be less than the trim length (by 0.01). Is this a problem? I always thought you shouldn't go any less than trim length, so I am a bit confused. Thanks in advance for helping me clear this up!

alohanole;

I have been using the X-Die ever since they came out and I have always trimmed my brass to 1.750" before the first time I ever resize them and then haven't had to do it again. I personally don't think that trimming them to 1.740" is an issue either, the only reason I don't is that I use a Possum Hollow case trimmer that is already set to 1.750". The key is always make sure that you trim your brass before you run it through the die the first time to resized. I shoot a fairly warm load and so far I haven't had a case split, usually the primer pocket gets loose first or I loose them. Hope this helps.

Idano,

You trim them before you size them the 1st time? I've been trimming them after the first time I size them, then never after that. I hope I'm not doing it wrong, but it's working for me.

EddieCoyle;

If you don't use the standard Full Length Resizing Die then trim first before ever running it into your X-Die. However, if you run it into the Full Length Resizing Die first then you can trim and then when you reload it again just use your X-Die to resize
RCB Manual said:
PREPARING YOUR CASES
All cases must be sized and trimmed to the same
overall length. For the best results, full-length
resize (This does not mean in the X-Die)
each case and trim to .020” under maximum
case length. This is a “one-time only” preparation
of any and all cases to be used in the X-Sizer die.
The X-Sizer die can be used for full-length resizing
by setting it as follows:
  • Install the proper shell
  • Adjust the mandrel so the decapping pin extends 1/8” below the die
  • Screw the X-Sizer die into the press until the die touches the shell holder
    when the shell holder is brought up to the top of the press stroke. To remove
    any play in the press linkage system, lower the shell holder and adjust the die
    1/8 to 1/4 of a turn downward so the press cams over center. Lower the press handle all the way and note the “feel” of the cam over in the linkage.
    With the handle all the way down, tighten the large die lock ring.
