Police have arrested a Kitchener man after Forest Heights Collegiate was locked down and evacuated shortly after 11 a.m. today. Police received a report that between four and six intruders carrying weapons, believed to be lead pipes, were in the school.
Waterloo regional police Insp. Bryan Larkin said the weapons were not knives or firearms. He would not release further details other than to say no injuries were reported.
Approximately 40 officers including 12 tactical were combing through the school building and portables looking for the intruders, who were presumed to have left the area.
Larkin said no arrests have been made but police had ?good investigative leads? as to the identities of the intruders.
School principal Peter Rubenschuh said the incident was reported to him after a group of students gathered in a hallway were overheard commenting about a weapon. At that point, the school sounded a "code red'' intruder alert. School doors were locked, drapes were drawn and students were instructed to either sit or lie on the floor in the corners of the rooms.
Students in some cases were locked down for between 30 minutes and two hours.
