I don't care much for scoped rifles, so my favorite calibers are those big "knock 'em dead" rounds like a 45/70, 44Magnum, etc. with quality peep sights that I can clearly hit with out to 100 yards. For me, if your live target is beyond 100 yards, you aren't hunting, you're just shooting.
I much prefer a low power scope on a brush rifle, faster than aligning sights and brighter in dense cover near dusk or at dawn. Besides, my eyes are too old to trust irons in all, but noon in an open field. I have shot deer at noon in an open field, but not that many.
My .308 wears a Weaver KV 2x10x40. It'll hunt heavy woods just as well as open ridge lines.
Well, scratch that plan. My .260 doesn't like the only factory ammo I have (120 grain Federal Fusion) and I don't have time to work up a custom load for it before the season starts, so I'm back to the .308.
