Hey y'all, just now entering the 21st C. with the digi pics and interwebs.
This is an M59 Yugo SKS, built to mimic the Russian as closely as possible, and in fit and finish is far removed from the M59/66's that are much more numerous. It has, presumably, the carrier's name Dano carved on the right side. The 'A' shows a 3-dot carving, likely used as a checkpoint mark for un-uniformed fighters.
The refinishing was done with an eye to keeping the handled look of the weapon because it served in conflict, so I carefully sanded, used spray polyurethane in many repetitions in order to put the carving and condition of the wood 'under glass'. It's the Carpathian elm so it may not have the light color but the wood originally had a hue more like red cedar. The metal was reblued in professional manner by a good friend who's a whiz with all things metal.
It was picked up at a gun show here in Austin in '09 () for a pretty penny, but it was a valued shooter in the vendor's collection. He wasn't joking about it being a shooter, it's good to go at 100m with stock sights, standing.
I may have to take some better ones, but not bad for my first THR pic post.
Let's see some other fine examples of SKS's too!
