So a friend of mine came out a couple weeks ago to shoot and had the opportunity to shoot my 700 in .223 at 200 & 300yds on steel. He'd never shot anything close to a precision rig previously and was impressed.

On Friday I had a few of the guys I served with in 1st ID over prior to the 1st ID DS reunion and we decided to do some "guy" shopping in and around KC (Cabela's, Bushell Outlet, Scheels, etc.). My friend that shot the .223 wanted to talk to my smith about having a rifle built. Hitting a 4" plate, my Turkey swinger, and head shots on a 2/3rds IDPA silhouette at 300yds was just too much for him and he now had the itch. But, to my surprise, when I called I learned that my smith closed his doors the Monday before. Major bummer for me, minor disappointment for my friend. Now I've got to find a new smith prior to my next project.

Since my smith started with GAP in KC, I figured we'd give them a call to see if we could look at some rifles and get some ideas. Just window shopping.. No problem they said swing on by, which we did. They gave us a tour, showed some models and works in progress. For just $8600.00 and an 8 month wait, my friend should be all set.. Bartlein barrel (Mod 400 Steel), Manners stock, Vortex Razor & Cerakote. Then we went to Scheels and he bought 10lbs of Varget ($59 per.. ouch!), 2K Match SR primers, and a variety of match bullets to try. Now he's building a rifle range on one of his properties in anticipation.

I came home wallet intact, but with a small BBQ sauce stain on my T shirt from lunch (greasy ribs).

IF you get the chance when in KC I'd give them a call (GAP) and the folks at Manners (right down the road) both are great to talk to, but leave your wallet/checkbook in the truck.

Awesome please keep us updated as to the progress of your friends rifle and range but talk about jumping off the deep end I would’ve suggested a tikka Varmint 223 or my favorite savage model 12 VLP DBM in Bright Stainless and a nice piece of glass and he would’ve been in business wow $8600 on your first target rig man oh man I’ll have to dream about that one

Trust me.. I did.

We went from "getting ideas" to filling out an order form in a blink of an eye.
