Sorry for the delay in getting the pictures. I picked up the package earlier today but I was helping a buddy prep his bike for a track day event coming up next Monday so things were pretty busy. However I did steal him away to take a picture of me with the new toys. We actually took about 10 but a few were too fuzzy (how in hell he manages an out of focus picture with an autofocus camera is beyond me but that's Eric for ya!), some had me grinning like to scare the kids and the ones where I tried to look mean like an ornery outlaw just looked like I was suffering from heartburn. So I went with the rather mundane but focused shot shown below.

These are consecutive serial number 1858's in your basic blued finish with brass trigger guards and medium dark wood grips. Nothing exotic to see here but for the price I got on the pair I'm more than happy. They have both been fired a bit but precious little according to the seller and they look like they live up to the claim. Very bright and shiney bores on both with just a trace of detent marks on one with none on the other. This pair also came with one extra cylinder and a set of Uncle Mikes nipples so I've got some alternatives to play with.

Next up is to order up a holster rig for them. I'm going low gunslinger on the right to aid in drawing out the long barrel and high mount cross draw for the left hip so I don't need to flip it from hand to hand or at least I can draw the left side from around the cylinder to aid with transfering to the right.

Without further ado here's the proud new parent of his pretty looking set of twins.

Very nice..!

Darn it, why'd you get me looking at such nice Remingtons, when I'm s'posed to be trying to find myself a 'Shooter' Colt??

Not fair!

Lol...

My proud three year old with "his" new shooting iron!

He,he.... the box wasn't open for more than about 4 minutes before I was doing the Clint Eastwood cylinder rollout and roll in...... some practice will be needed before I'm ready for the screentest.... :D

It may not happen right away but I'm thinking about making up a wooden transport case to hold the pair of them in a proper recessed and flocked presentation style once the case opens up.

Messmerist, your boy has that "whad'ya think YER lookin' at scum?" look that I was trying for but failed.

Uberti.

So far no luck on getting the caps but I talked to a guy that carries re-loading supplies and he says he has a stock of them. Got his card and I'll be seeing him this week both for stuff for the Remmies as well as some modern cartridge re-loading supplies.

Rotten eggs! ! !

Darn you guys! Not ONE of you told me about the rotten egg smell that happens when I drop the dirty gun parts into the hot soapy water...

From this admonishment you can guess that I'm no longer a black powder virgin.... :D

It was a VERY short range session. A shooting buddy and I went out to my outdoor club where I'll be shooting in my first CAS club event tomorrow. The whole reason being to just make sure the gun works and that I had all my proper stuff lined up. We were running late and he had to be back in town by a certain time to go out tonight with his SWMBO. So it was literally one round to just make sure I had it all running well followed by a full cylinder of 6 rounds. Then it was onto my new Puma .357 to see if the sights tweak did what I needed and then pack up and leave. All went well with all 7 BP shots from the Remington being trouble free. The sights on the Uberti Remington are a bit open to interpretation but I was still able to shoot one high, two low and the rest into a 3'ish inch group in the center just a hair to the left of the bull at 15'ish yards. All in all I think it's as good as any of my other guns and it'll just take a bit of time to get even tighter groups. That and I was shooting with thin leather gloves on "just in case" thanks to the thread floating around here.

The caps all seemed to drop away with no issues and I didn't even tilt or tip the gun during the hammer cockings. With 30 grains of Goex FFF the caps are split wide like a squashed orange if the one left after the last shot is any indication. Trigger pull is light to moderate with a really nice clean break. To say I'm happy would be like saying some kids like ice cream.... :D

As mentioned I loaded with 30 grains with ball directly over powder since I have not had a chance to find any lubed wads. WIth this load the balls were so far back there was no way to seal them with the grease without packing it in almost an 1/8 inch thick. So I used a trick shown on Youtube by one BP shooter and put a drop of oil on the joint so it wicked around to provide a wet seal. For oil I'm using Canola cooking oil based on the sticky thread at the top of this forums BP listings. The oil itself actually makes for pretty good cleaning as well. I applied it to the chambers and then used two patchings to dry most of it away. This seemed to work just great since I totally forgot to pop off a set of primers to "clean and prep" the cylinder chambers and there was no issue at all. Spears .457 balls fit in nicely with just a light and even ring cut off for each chamber.

A buddy got both a still showing the big smoke puff as well as a short video where I yell out "WHAT A SMOKE SHOW!" at the end of it. Shooting it with what I gather is a reasonably light load it felt much like a .38 Spl to +P sort of push but with the push lasting for a longer time and with much less of an initial slap to the palm. Nothing new to you seasoned veterans but it was an eye opener to me not knowing what to expect.

Made up a quickie stand yesterday that I used and it was fine but I want to make up a cylinder only reloading stand in metal. But for now the gun stand and using the built in ram is fine.

From all this I guess you can figure out that I'm hopelessy hooked on this stuff now.... :D

Congrats... I spent my day wading through the final stretch of making a pair of rodeo show chaps for "Junior Miss Rodeo Washington". My girlfriend's daughter asked me if I'd make 'em if she won the pageant last fall... well... now I'm making good on my end. She's gonna be one stoked 14yr old when she straps 'em on and gets to wear 'em in her home town parade next weekend.

Sweet.... do you do holsters and belts as well?

I'm liking the looks of the LeatherTown USA's offerings as sold on Ebay. They seem to be decent for the price and a cheap way to get by for now in the CAS events. If they come up short then I'll look at nicer stuff but at the moment I'm a bit desparate to get a rig.

I'm even MORE desparate trying to figure out what my Nom de Fusil will be... :D

I enjoy woodworking as well as metal working along with long walks on the beach at twi.... er... never mind..... so I was thinking about Woodworth "Woody" Smith to sort of put the two together. And if anyone asks about the name I can always say that it's obviously an alias.... :D

I have a cross-draw holster pattern that just plain rocks !!! A buddy of mine did one (with gunbelt and cartridge loops) up for his Blackhawk .44 magnum. I haven't made a holster yet... but, I've made a bridle, a set of reins, and now a pair of show chaps... so, a rig is in my future and I'm sure it'll come together rather nicely. There's been others... some knife sheaths, a clutch purse, a checkbook cover, a gaggle of key fobs and what not. I'm lookin' forward to makin' a double rig... especially when I finally get my 1858 Bison to pair up with my Walker.

Got some more bows I want to make up too.

You're SOOOOOO right. I'm already thinking about a Walker and an 1860. But only singles for these. The pair of Remingtons was a fluke but a fortuitous one. I'm probably going to stick with this pair as my CAS kit to the point I get one more cylinder to make it to a total of 4, 2 each. That way I only need to load them every other stage. Or maybe 3 more so I only need to do the chore every 3rd stage. We'll see.

I doubt I'll go BP for cartridge stuff but I can see getting a flint or percussion single shot pistol and probably some sort of long range muzzle loading rifle... maybe....

I love it when another acolyte succumbs to the power of the Holy Black. Good to hear you had a great range day. You must post your CAS experience for us to enjoy. The Little One liked your picture with your babies also. Thanks...now he wants two!! He loves going to the "wange." and helping Daddy load and shoot. So far he has only shot "his" .36 Police. Grandpa in NY has a picture of him shooting it in his wallet and loves showing it off to his anti-gun colleagues. One absolutely melted in a foaming rage and asked how I could abuse a child so!:D p.s. Get a WALKER first and join the WALKER Club.

I'm back, I'm tired and muscle sore and I can't wipe the grin off my face!

I'm typing this as one of the guns taken completely apart is "baking" in the toaster oven and the other is soaking for a few minutes. I just took a break to make a sandwich (too hot and too tired to cook) and crack another cold one.

The formula from yesterday (30 grains, no wad, ball then a goodly drop of canola oil just before capping) worked superbly all day. In the first stage one gun shot like a champ but the other had 3 FTF's that required going around the clock again for a second hit. One STILL refused. A third time 'round didn't help either so on the instruction of the RO I rested the hammer on an already fired chamber and continued. Turned out to be a duff cap. This was a lesson to seat the caps far more firmly than I'd originally thought they needed. Even with that there was one extra tight nipple that required two strikes to ignite that just would not go away. So every time through with that one I had to walk it around and hit it a second time. But it fired the second time consistently.

The thump from the 30 grains was a satisfying one similar to a .38Spl or maybe a bit more but a smoother build and end unlike the slap of smokeless. But I'm not telling YOU guys anything you don't know already... :D I found it very comfortable

BONUS TIME.... I was one of the three or four shooters in what they called "Traditional Cartridge" and managed to surprise myself with a second place. So while I was having my share of issues apparently I didn't have as much as some other guys or I managed to catch up with the rifle and shotgun parts.

The fat nipple will be identified and chucked up in my lathe for a diet after comparing the measurements of the other more svelte brotheren.

We went 6 stages so that's 30 shots per gun. "Just in case" I took the trigger guard and grips off the first one being cleaned and found what looked like a load of road asphalt inside the works. Needless to say they both got stripped down pronto for a thorough clean. Not knowing the history of the guns I don't know if this grunge was already in there so we'll see how it goes for the next time or two. It would be nice if I only have to do a complete action strip and clean ever few times but if needed I'll do it each time. It just means I need to shoot it enough to make the extra work worthwhile :D

The Holy Black sure has an aroma all it's own. Not unpleasent at all until it hits water for cleaning then it's just ugly.

I'm curious about how well the Canola oil will work out for short term storage between sessions. I'll be checking by patching the bores of the spare cylinder for signs of rust on a regular basis. Perhaps I should switch to regular vegtable oil? Or the other thought was to heat it up a bit and let cool. Hot enough to boil water and drive off any moisture in the oil.

The bit in the sticky thread about using a vegatable based oil sure does seem to be spot on. The residue fouling is so easy to clean out it's almost silly. Shiney barrel bores after only a couple of dunks, a couple of brush passes and a hot water rinse. Bright and shiney.

Used up about 4 to 5 oz of powder. Gotta get shopping for a couple or three pounds of stock.
