In the AR platform, which caliber is the best for longer distances and accuracy? Is the 6.5 Grendel all they say it is? Is it worth getting a more obscure caliber in the AR 15, or is it better to just abandon the AR 15 platform altogether and go to the AR 10? How about some of the other caliber choices out there? What kind of distance and accuracy is the .204 Ruger capable of?

Also, if there is a better semi-auto alternative to the AR for this role that is still fairly light weight and has decent capacity, I would be interested in comments on those as well.

Yup 6.5 Grendel is the king of long range lightweight AR's.

6.8 spc is a good second choice.

Otherwise look into larger AR10 sized Ar's for longer range. Like the LMT .308 or the Larue OBR.

How far do you want to shoot? You don't necessarily need a different caliber. A LaRue 5.56 OBR (LT-15) comes with a sub-MOA guarantee when using 77gr match ammo. Mine came with the target the factory fired to prove it (5 shot group, too, not just 3 shots).

A .223 can be good out to 500-600 yards or better with the right shooter and loads.

If you're going for 800+ yards I'd probably switch to .308 in an AR-10 or something like the FN FNAR, which is also known to shoot sub-MOA.

Also, if you're trying to hunt at further ranges, you'd want to switch from the .223 earlier than you'd need to just for paper punching.

what about the 7mm08? im not an ar guy so excuse my blasphemy. isnt the 7mm08 short enough to fit i an ar platform?

How about a 6BR, 6BRX, or 6.5BR? It depends on what you mean by long range too. In the AR-15 platform these reach out as far as the AR-15/shooter is capable of. Just wish I had personal experience to go with it ;)

I agree with the Grendel in the ar15 platform, for an AR10 I would think seriously about a .243 or .260 rather than a .308.

.260 Rem in an AR10. Of course if one does not hand load its not a great choice and something like a .308 would be better.
