I haven't seen any talk about Weatherby and wanted to see everyone's opinions about their rifles. I went onto their site and mainly looked at their Mark V rifles. Are the offerings from Weatherby that much better than the competition, I just don't understand how a hunting rifle can be worth $2,000+.

Pick up a Mark V and compare it to a Savage, Ruger, Remington, or any other consumer sporting rifle costing half as much.

I didn't know how a Porsche or BMW could sell for two to three times as much as a similar size Chevy or Ford either.
Until I drove them.

The quality and attention to detail of the Mark V is just amazing.
And it takes good old fashioned work to make them like that.

Will it shoot twice as small a groups as a rifle costing half as much?
No.
But it's more fun to coon-finger and look at then the cheaper rifle if you like higher quality firearms.

I have only had the Vanguard in 300 WBY Mag & i loved it I am planning to buy me another one the Vanguard 2 & even if i could i wouldn't pay $2000 for a deer rifle thats way too much to pay & use it where i hunt it wouldn't be pretty for long I don't abuse any gun but there is a lot of thickets & briars that do enought to my Handi Rifle i have always said that the Mark V Weatherby was for Doctors & Lawyers lol :D

They are nice guns, mainly status symbols. Most are made in Japan these days but so is Lexus I suppose. I hunt hard and would never take a $2000 pc of furniture on a hunt. I have seen $300 walmart guns shoot just as tight but you dont take those hunting with your country club buddies.

Just from the website the Mark V Deluxe was gorgeous and I think owning one in .30-06 would be fun, I just find it hard to imagine spending the $2,300 for the rifle. I do plan on having a decent collection of firearms as I get older, maybe it will be a Birthday gift to myself down the road, and then when I'm ready pass it onto my favorite child (Only 19, don't have any kids).

Anyone that has shot one of these rifles and spent any amount of time with one, how accurate are their rifles? Sub-MOA?

Do not like allot of recoil. My Weatherby Vangard in 300 Wby. mag hase a factory muzzle brake. Very accurate, very shoulder friendly, very loud! If shooting with people, have them stand directly behind you. To the side is louder and waves will shake you.

I have a Weatherby Mark V. The only reason I payed that much money though was that it's a 460. It is a very beautiful and well made rifle as well as being tons of fun to shoot.

That's about it for me. If I ever went hunting in Africa though it would be my first choice to take.

Good point, Africa does have some very large game that requires very large calibers. On the other hand is there any game in North America that you could take without destroying a lot of meat?

IMHO weatherby vanguards and howa 1500s are the best out there. I've had the rest but none have stuck with me. I will be keeping my howa 22-250 and weatherby 257 from now on. And next time I buy a bolt action it will be howa or weatherby for sure. Nothing else compares.

The Weatherby Mark V rifles are beautiful...superb craftsmanship and plain simple beautiful looking...I definitely plan to get one in an exotic Weatherby caliber.

However I had one of the Weatherby technician (incredible but true) admitting that the Vanguard is an amazing value at its price point (I own one, head and shoulder superior to the competition) and that the Mark v is not really worth the asking premium difference, not to mention that the Vanguard replicate its bigger brother look.

I overall agree to a point....your average Chevy or Ford definitely yes.....the premium price compared to the comparable Japanese competition no.....just to give an example, a 5 Series is definitely worth being priced double than an Impala (heck yes!!) but, in my opinion, is not worth the price difference with an Infiniti M.

The new Vette can give any Porsche a run for its money (except in fit and finish but in that class of car i do not really care).

I take a Nissan 370Z any time over a Porsche Cayman.....at that price point Porsche does not even give you a LSD...a shame....

I suspect I will invariably purchase a Mark V Deluxe in a .30-06, although can anyone tell me what is different between the Deluxe, Lazermark, and the Ultramark?

Fundamentally all 3 of them are luxury version of the Mark V...hand picked wood, fine checkering, deep bluing...the Deluxe basically is what the "normal" Mark V was in the 60's before El Cheapo did strike the firearm industry with synthetic stocks and passable finishing....

On the 460; Peter Hathaway Capstick used the 460 Weatherby on several Lions in Africa. I'll never forget when I read about the time he fired both barrels of his 460 Wby Double rifle; He said it was Ten Thousand foot-pounds of energy when he fired both barrels. He was in a hut and the lion jumped right on top the hut and he fired from inside the hut, through ceiling. It was those fragile huts build by tribesmen. That was in my favorite book of all time: "Death in the Long Grass" by Peter Capstick.

I can't let this one go without at least making mention of a problem with Weatherby.

No matter what else there is to say about them, the customer service should be better than having a rifle waiting close to a year now for warranty work. Polite phone calls have done no good so far, and BS as well as lying does nothing to satisfy the situation.

i had my WeatherbyVanguard 300 WBY Mag shooting like a good 22lr& got in a hard place & had to sell it i am gonna start a layaway after i get my Super Redhawk paid off I Loaded for mine & it was a excellent tack driver well that hard time has passed & the next one i buy i wont have to let it go reloading is the only way i could get to learn my rifles because of thier crazy high priced factory ammo

Weatherby Mark V in ether 300 wby or 340 wby wonderful elk/bear/moose rifles. The price of these rifle while high compared to the $600 basic Remington,Savage,Winchester rifles, are less than most custom built rifles of the same quality. On G.B. most days you can find a nice Mark V for $1200-$3500,

For me Weatherby means the Mark V action.
I like the Vanguard line but it is a Howa 1500, that is not a bad thing.

True. Not really fair to judge Weatherby by the Vanguard. Vanguards and Howa 1500s are great rifles but can't compare to the Mark 5 in any aspect other than accuracy.

If I could find the Mark V, .257 Wby Magnum I sold 20 years ago, I would gladly buy it back for what I sold it for. Or maybe more. :) One of those rifles I never should have sold.

I picked up my first Weatherby centerfire in 2010.

Deluxe.gif

It is a Vanguard Deluxe in .30-06. Like mentioned the accuracy standard is the same for both Vanguard and the Mark V and judging by the wood I have seen on both the wood on this Deluxe is more than nice enough , especially compared to other rifles in the same price range.

Two made in Germany Weatherbys. Biggun is a .300 and went with to Africa in 1978-9 . It killed everything aside from hippo and buff which I used a Mod. 70 Winchester .458 and left it with the PH as a tip. I continued to use the .300 I had since 1976 until the early 80s when I went another way. Although the .300 is worth the $1000 or so I paid for it, strangely it does not seem to be appreciating which I find weird. I also picked up in the 80s a Southgate made FN actioned .300 used as a factory try rifle" in the early 50s which is quite unique and I have not shot that one. I have a .378 Shultz and Larsen actined Weatherby that I have shot but it has brutal recoil, it is on consignment for $1500 and not moving well.:(
The little Weatherby is a German made Varmintmaster in ,224 Weatherby. I love the .224 Weatherby but wish very much it had a faster twist so I could use 75 grain .224 bullets. It stabilizes 60 grain Nosler partitions but no longer. I use it for deer hunting the little Blacktail around here with Barnes Triple shock 53 grain bullets and it kills like lightning at 3600 fps with no fuss ! The .300 and .224 are with me till I die.
