I ordered some of the x ring rubber bullets from midway and was wondering if any one here has had experience with them. I'm curious about residue, over penetration, and any other pitfalls one may run into using them.

We shoot 'em a lot Gene.
No issues with residue or rubber build up.
I can tell you for a fact that they will penetrate at least one side of a hollow core interior door :uhoh:
Also, they work great for rodent control.
I live in a house built in 1830 so keepin mice out in the winter is pretty much not happenin here lol.
I've picked off a few in my livin room with my SP-101 and rubber bullets.
They hit hard enough to tear a mouses head clean off. :)

I have found that they perform better, and are easier to load, in the plastic cases as opposed to usin brass. Ya don't hafta git into drillin flash holes like with the brass either.
Here's the cases i use. I jist did a quick search online and they are still very available fer 'bout $8 a box.Shipping is 'bout the same so i'd order from yer local dealer if possible.

Make sure you seat the bullet before you prime the case, ( especialy with the plastic cases), or you get and air bubble inside and the bullet will not seat. I believe that my plastic cases are made by SPEER if i'm not mistaken. The beauty of the plastic cases also is that you can seat the primers and the bullets totaly by hand with no tools required. I de-prime by usin a LEE decapper and base. The primer is seated by simply layin the primers anvil up and press the case down over it by hand.

You can either tap the punch with a small mallet or jist push it by hand.
The combo of the plastic case and rubber bullets is pretty darn accuarte too. At least the 15 feet it is across my livin room :)

Sure wish i could find some .45 plastic cases and rubber bullets for our Vaqeros.

One more point. These components seem to never wear out. I've been usin these fer about 15 years and i have never had to open any more than one bag o' bullets. I have about 4 er 5 bags and am still usin the first bag.

These rubber bullets are a ton o' fun and with a cardboard box with a hank o' carpet hangin in it you can shoot in yer living room.
Airgun traps work very well also.

Do I need to resize brass that was fired with normal bullets before I try to load the rubber ones? Does the case mouth need to be flared in order to seat the bullets or will just resized ones work fine?

Thanks for all you help.

Yes size & deprime.
No flaring should be necessary but chamfering couldn't hurt.

NOTE:
The flash holes will have to be drilled out with a 1/8" drill bit, or primer set-back will tie up the gun.

Another option besides drilling out primer pockets

I load black powder blanks for our 45LC Vaqueros and they have the same problem with primers backing out.

An option to drilling out the primer pocket would be to use Starline brass that is designed for blanks. I have reloaded blanks for CMS with great results.

Below is an excerpt from the Starline webpage:
45 Long Colt Blank Brass (Large Pistol primer) 1.273"-1.283" O.A

The .45 Long Colt Blank has the same external dimensions as the standard .45 Colt but utilizes a .140" diameter flash hole to keep the primer from backing out with blanks. FOR BLANK USE ONLY!

Grafs sells them in smaller qty's

I've read about people using glue sticks and wax but have never tried it. I'm hoping these reusable rubber bullets serve my needs. I'm curious to try them in a 9mm as well do I can practice first round shots from my holster

Gene, those SPEER cases i posted above are plastic and still available at about $8 a box for 50.
There is no 'prep' needed with those and you can use 'em over and over.
I've had and used these cases and bullets off and on for more than 15 years

No tools are needed either to prime or seat the bullet.
You do hafta deprime with a punch tho. That LEE base and punch is like $5 for the set.

X-Ring rubber bullets work really well from aluminum Blazer cases. .38 cases are Berdan primed and a pain to deprime, but I figured out how to drill out a centered flash hole using a drill press and then deprime using the stationary bit. And being aluminum, they are easy to keep separate from regular brass.
