Homeland Security Stockpiles Assault Weapons Under the Heading of Personal Defense

The POTUS and the liberal gun grabbers have gone to great lengths to demonize the evil "Assault Weapons." While at the same time the Department of Homeland Security is stockpiling these same guns under the heading as rifles suitable for self defense. Even ordering the dreaded hi-cap 30 round magazines for "self defense."

"The RFP describes the firearm as “Personal Defense Weapon (PDW) – 5.56x45mm NATO, select-fire firearm suitable for personal defense use in close quarters and/or when maximum concealment is required.” Additionally, DHS is asking for 30 round magazines that “have a capacity to hold thirty (30) 5.56x45mm NATO rounds.”

Everyone needs to ask themselves why is our government trying so hard to disarm its law abiding citizens while at the same time stockpiling the same type of weapons and magazines to use against them if the need arises. There was a reason for the 2nd Amendment and it had nothing to do with killing food.

Don't forget to note that the ones they are asking for would actually be illegal for us lowly private citizens to purchase anyway. They are asking for select-fire, which makes them machine guns.

Like the government/military don't already have enough guns. I'm glad they're still dropping money like there's no tomorrow when our country is broke. Let's just keep hemorrhaging money to protect the government from the people that might actually get fed up at some point and decide a change is needed.

7,000 items isn't very many. Still, flash hider, pistol grip, folding or collapsible stock, length less than 20" collapsed or 30" extended, select fire, 30rd mags.....i.e. everything that is verboten for normal citizens.

Let us all enlist in the Homeland Security Department so that we may receive our evil black rifles and 30 round magazines courtesy of the government. Will this be a domestic Fast n' Furious then?

It is hard not to laugh thinking of the typical TSA agent lumbering down my street with a M16 to assult my house to take my guns away. After all, they are part of homeland security.......chris3

The better use of the DHS RFP is to point to the government defining modern sporting rifles as "personal defense weapons" suitable for defense.

By those specs, yes. I'm not sure why they need a "new" PDW (especially at only 7k examples) as there are plenty of options out there these days. The USSS uses the P90 and Dos DS uses a Colt SMG. The P90 is a PDW albeit not in 5.56 NATO and doesn't use STANAG and the Colt is 9mm and can't be made as compact as it is AR based.

Does anybody know what's out there that meets their specs? What will happen is that with a production run of 7k items, they'll run the costs WAY up if this is a new design.

A Sig 551 SBR meets everything, down to the barrel twist and all. Not a "PDW" at all really.

You realize that TSA is not a law enforcement agency. The main law enforcement agencies under DHS are HSI (7,000 Special Agents), Secret Service (4,000 Special Agents) and US Border Patrol (20,000 Border Patrol Agents).

When you look at those numbers of armed agents the submitted purchase proposal doesn't sound so crazy. I know it is more fun to get paranoid and imply that TSA is trying to police US citizens.

Actually I misspoke, TSA screeners are unarmed. TSA air marshals are armed.
