Very little to add to the good advice here, but FWIW: don't take any chances with your wife's safety, really. My missus was v e r y anti-carrying (though not so much on having them around the house), but has slowly come round over the years. What worked for her was: a) a few situations...

Lovely. Great buckle design, too. Often tried single-piece buckles to avoid the twist you mention, but this looks like the perfect solution.
