I'll play...
My choice is easy.
Daisy Red Ryder
I have more happy memories involving a Red Ryder than any other rifle. I realize it does not strictly fit the definition of a rifle, but the Daisy is still my choice.
Mosin Nagant 91/30. Definitely a big boom, and for about $200 he can get the rifle and about 440 rounds to shhot through it! It even comes with a bayonet and a little bit of history.
I keep a pistol handy almost all of the time (goes in the safe when the nieces and nephews visit), and a shotgun in the bedroom. I just don't feel unsafe enough at home to have a rifle every room that I am in. There is one in the bedroom, though.
You can't go wrong with a Mosin Nagant. $100 for the rifle, and $80 for a tin of 440 rounds. Cheap and fun!
Another rifle to consider is a Yugo 24/47 Mauser. These can be had for about $200, and a tin of 340 runs about $90.
Both are fun to shoot and won't set you back too much.
I'm a big fan of having a good knife, although substituting it for your only spare magazine is an iffy proposition. My current favorite is a CRKT M21-14. I am able to get the knife out a little quicker than my concealed pistol. I know that there are a lot of commandos out there who will tell...
