I had one of those many years ago, I took it to a local club shoot and got talked into a match between several black powder pistols and several smokeless pistols. It was their range. Surprised me when they called my name as the winner. They shoot very good.

I shot 30 grains of ffg in my .50 target shooting, and i shot a squirrel with a 90 grain load of ffg once. Squirrels are small and whatever you hit is ruined. I got lucky and got a head shot...it disappeared.

My father had one...it did a great job of calling other squirrel hunters.

I have a H&A underhammer with the same fast twist barrel. It will not shoot large powder charges accurately with patched ball. Mine will shoot one hole groups with 30 grain 3f loads.

An oversize ball will do no good since it will be sized to whatever the cylinder size is when loaded, or break your loading lever.

It should be ok, i wouldn't use it for cooking.
