Should be an interesting weekend. :)
Recently got a great deal and picked up a DSA FN-FAL California model carbine (has the fixed 10rd. mag). Shoots great (loves my Port surplus). Since I live in Nevada, now need to know how to convert it to use detachable mags. Has anyone done this?
BTW, to those to may suggest contacting DSA...

Having done it a few times now, bedding pillers and just glass bedding the receiver. Putting in a heavy barrel I think you should just try to free float it.
Post pics when your done.:)
So I'm currently looking at the 3 scopes below for a .308 scout rifle project. Has anyone used these or have a recommendation? Currently leaning towards the Burris 2-7X with Ballistic plex reticle.
Aimpoint 9000L 2x Red Dot Sight
Leupold FX-II 2.5x28mm Scout
Burris 2-7x32 Scope w/...
Looking for a non-permanent scout scope mount for an FN Israel Mauser in 7.62mm Nato. Have not had any luck locating one for this particular model. Standard 98K ones don't fit. Contacted S & K mounts, but they aren't sure which of their current models would work (Chilean 1935, Spanish 1916...
Heres what we use, Burris Handgun 2-7x32 scopes:

Great scope & love the Ballistic Plex Reticle.
Timc,
I like it. Where did you get the flash hider and how long is the cone (looks like 2 inches)?
As an aside, I've threaded a couple of Mausers & Mosin Nagants (carbines) for some of the younger guys in the shop for Vortex flash hiders. Not period looking, but those Vortex really work...
Being an old thread, but as to hand guard replacement, I've known a couple of folk's that made a copy of it (from a second rifle) out of fiberglass. Made a mold of the hand guard in plaster of Paris, then poured fiberglass (bought at Home Depot) let set, hollow out the inside with a dremal, fit...
Are there any reliable & detachable magazine conversions (5 or 10 rd.) for the 98 Mauser rifle? A friend bought a Gibbs conversion, but had poor performance with it.
I've used the AmegaRanges mount on my M-1 and a couple of friends have it on there Garands. I use a Burris 2 3/4 X scout scope (German 3 post reticle) with a 200M zero. Love it. One friend has an Aimpoint 9000L 2 X (2 MOA dot) on his and the other guy did some machining on his to fit a Burris...
So my son is coming back from his 3rd (hopefully last) tour in the sandbox and as a welcome home gift has requested me to try and come up with a way to mount his 3 x ACOG TA-33G with the .308 reticle he's used over there on his Yugo .308 M-63 "Tanker" (yes we know it's a marketing thing, but...
While in another service living in Africa before becoming an American, I carried an M3A1, which frankly was fine for up to 75m. I also packed an M-79 "blooper" for anything beyond that range. Worked out to be a good combo and both never let me down.
As far as improving the iron sights, you can always add a Mojo rear peep sight. Really makes a huge difference.
This website also has a few Mosin improvement tips:

Yea the price is pretty decent considering it's a new rifle (the "Tankers" they sell that is). It's very easy to install the S & K mount, took about 20 minutes. I don't have a digital camera, so sorry about no pics. However, go to the S & K website and they have pics of all of their mounts...
I was going to do the same (except in .308) with an old action, but adding up the costs, gunsmithing, time, etc., I went with a new manufactured M 63 "Tanker" in .308. It's well made, very handy in the carbine form, takes stripper clips and quite accurate. I used an S & K scout mount and a...
My wife loves her M-1 carbine (she's 5'3" 130 lb.). It's a great weapon for those of small stature or recoil sensitivity. With softpoints or Corbon ammo in the clips, it's going to stop evildoers at suburban ranges. That said, if you want a PS90, go for it but do it sooner than later.
