    .308 case length

Wow! Interesting thread. Thanks. A lot of great info and great theories. I'll have to read it a few more times to fully absorb. I'll be going home and doing some more testing of my own.

    .308 case length

I've checked both. Even at 2.005 the neck is tight enough that the oal doesn't change after chambering. And I suppose because the chamber is so long, I'm not getting any change in the shoulder.

Expander getting pulled out of die, stuck in brass

I agree that it is likely insufficient internal neck lube. I lube with Imperial Dry (graphite) Neck Lube. It is more time consuming so I only use it on my accuracy rifle reloads. But since switching to the dry lube, the necks move back and forth over the expander with zero effort. And this is...

    measuring IMR 4831

Unless you spend $350+ for a high end automatic measure/scale combo, I have found no difference in the accuracy/consistency of the different brands of powder measures. If you want BR consistency, you'll have to weigh every load anyway. And you'll likely have to trickle every load to get it right...

    .308 case length

Please correct me if I'm wrong. I reload .308 for an AR-10. The neck gets no where near the chamber mouth. Safety should not be a concern. But I still trim to 2.005. When the cases expand to 2.010, I trim back to 2.005. My reason for doing this is for long distance accuracy. I've not chrony'd to...

    Question....308

I load for .308; but only for paper. With that caveat, I would guess that, because of the differences in ballistic coefficient and sectional density in match and true hunting bullets, the powder, charges and optimal fps for hunting loads would be significantly different from match loads.

    Velocity Deviation - .308

Extreme spread is the difference between your highest and lowest readings. The group you described had a 35 ES. This isn't bad. But you need to try to get it down to 15-20. And the longer your shots, the more effect ES can have on POI. A few things may help get your ES down. Try match grade...

    When to Trim Cases

Always AFTER resizing. I trim to .002" shorter than Sammi. That insures that the case will not likely stretch to over Sammi specs and cause problems. I measure after every 2-3 firings and re-trim to keep case lengths consistent to +/- .001".

    Bullet to riflng distance

+1 for the Hornady OAL Guage. I initially seat everything at .020" off lands. I then work up the most accurate load with several different powders and bullet types. After working up the most accurate and consistent (ES and SD) load, I go back and try a couple of different seating depths to see...

What powder do you like for your 308 semi auto?

z7, I took a look back at my 8208 targets and remembered that I didn't start the loads as hot as I had remembered. I started at 42gr (w/168mks) and got a .40" group. (See photo) It didn't feel too hot in my rifle. I then moved up to 43gr and 44 gr. Still got .79" on each. But they were showing...

    Powder for 308 on progressive

I think 8208 can be tuned to shoot the heavier .308s. (see photo below). And the kernels are about the same size as most ball powders. Another powder that is a very small extruded is RL15. Just a bit larger than 8208. Meters better than most sticks. And I know personally that it can give you...

    Powder for 308 on progressive

I've heard that AA2520 had that nickname. But I've also heard that it was a nick name that was established about twenty years ago and that it may no longer be the "Camp Perry Powder". Have you personally used it in a .308 auto load or any .308? If so, what kind of groups are you getting? I’m...

    Powder for 308 on progressive

Great group Arkansas. How many shots? Was this a .308 AR-10? Both 4895s work well for me too as well as 4064. But I seem to be getting the best consistent small groups with RL15. Here's a 3 shot group with H4895. Measured .24" The problem is I can't do this as consistently as I can get .50" with...

    Powder for 308 on progressive

Arkansas, It may have been "made" for .308 IIRC; but I can't get any better than 1 moa with 168s and 175s. And in all my internet research, I haven't found anyone claiming to shoot .50 with 168+s using this or any other ball powder. I'll be trying BLC-2 with 150s and 155s soon. Are you able to...

Question about Lee auto disk powder measure

I agree with the others that the auto disc is only a guide to get you close to the right disc. The estimate is generally low. So I normally start with one or two disc sizes higher. Then measure. Keep a good log of the throw weight for each disc cavity you try for each powder you try - even the...

    Powder for 308 on progressive

I'll give it a try. I'm shooting an AR-10. Are you able to get <.50 with AA2520 in an auto load?

    Powder for 308 on progressive

Hate to burst the bubble, but in my extensive attempts I have not been able to find a ball powder that will shoot the heavier .308s as well as the stick powders. And stick powders will not meter as well as ball powders. I've found that RL15 is probably the best metering stick. And it gives me...

Gieco...nah..I saved 15 hours swithing to Progressive

I have two Lee Load masters. I have one set up for volume handgun reloading and the other set up for precision rifle reloading. I use the rifle press more as a single press - FL or Neck size and decap, anneal (every 5 reloads), then stainless steel tumble and dry, trim if needed, prime on press...

What powder do you like for your 308 semi auto?

Z7, So far I've only tried one complete cycle of 8208 using 4 bullets with three charges on each. I had them all loaded too hot. So it didn't go well. But I like the powder and believe it can be tuned a lot better. I'll be going back to it. But for now RL15 is giving me the best results with the...
