I too believe the 686 might be a bit large to lug all day. I have the 686 SSR and it's a beast. Beauty though for sure. :)

I have shot and owned both over the years and now as well. I think Smiths are generally a bit smoother but I give it to Ruger for being built like a tank.

Great find. I love my Security Six in Stainless from 1980. It was a Vermont Highway patrolman's sidearm for many years. Will never leave my collection.

I think it is a two piece barrel. (Looks like it is to me) Allegedly the barrel is designed to be more accurate. Not sure how that's possible but I hear great things about the accuracy of this model.

Agreed about the lock. I looked for a 66 pre lock and found one just could not get there in time. Local sale. Found a 581 as well from the late 80's. Nice shape but was blued. Wanted a little shine on this one. :)
