Hi All......I need some advice from you Springfield experts.

I have come into posession of a Springfield '03-A3 that has been "sporterized" somewhere in the distant past. I am going to revitalize it into something useful with some new upgrades. It was drilled for scope mounts, but very poorly. The holes in the reciever ring seem fine but the only hole on the bridge is off center with no threads visible.

First question.....what mounts are available to fit the action, and can they be silver soldered onto the action itself? Is there a single piece pictny. on the market that will fit this action? It would need to be a zero moa piece.

Second question.....who makes a decent aftermarket single stage trigger for this old gun? The original military trigger is in place.

Third question.....is there a good synthetic stock available for this rifle....something decent like an HS or similar? The wood stock looks like it may have been an old Fajen, but it is trashed beyond use.

Finally, a bbl can obviously be obtained, but out of curiosity, what was the original rate of twist in these rifles?

Much of the original metal re-work was done decently well. The bolt handle is relocated and rewelded quite nicely. Ditto the work on the safety and follower. The action and bolt have been magnafluxed and look fine. Other advice or thoughts are welcome, and thanks in advance!

You could silver the rear, but I certainly would not do it on the front receiver ring!

Perhaps a better method would be to have a very good welder TIG the hole shut in the rear bridge and then re-drill & tap it.

Orginial twist was 1/10.

Timmeny makes some inexpensive, yet nice adjustable triggers for the 03 & 03A3.

Bell & Carlson makes nice carbon-fiber laminate stocks for them:

Can't help you on the Pict rail ?.

If your rifle is an 03-A3, rather than an earlier 1903, the rear scope mount attaches to the rear sight (male) dovetail. Was it drilled and tapped for another mount? Welding is the best way to 'erase' incorrectly drilled holes, as stated earlier.

I have a 1903 sporter in a Bell & Carlson stock - my first, and last B&C stock. The barrel channel was not centered, and the rear trigger guard screw was off a good 1/2". Unfortunately, the gunsmith who barreled the rifle for me started milling to align the barrel channel before he noticed that the screw hole was off, so I was stuck with the stock.

Now before everyone jumps on me, I've seen a number of B&C stocks that were far, far better than the one that I have. That's why I ordered this one. Based on the POS that they sent me, though, I will never, ever buy another one. YMMV.

The Timney is about your only choice for an aftermarket trigger for the Springfield these days. Dayton-Traister may also still offer one - Brownells carries their products.

Thanks for the info. It is indeed an '03 A3, and the bridge was drilled for another style of mount. Did you say the rear trigger guard hole was off by HALF AN INCH? Sounds like somebody had a rough weekend before they built that one! Thanks for the info, I will be sure to hold one in my hands before I buy. Does anyone know if semi inletted laminated blanks are available anywhere for these old boys?
