I have a relatively new 10/22 that is giving me problem. It is not modified in any way and has a couple hundred rounds through it. I seldom get through a 10 rd magazine without at least one stove pipe. I am using Remington ammo from a bulk box. Is there a brand of ammo that will work better or should I be considering some mods, new extractor maybe? I don't mind putting some money in it although all I am going to do is plink with it. Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.

You don't really need a new extractor with a factory barrel, the chamber is so loose cartridges are easy to pull out.

My favorite bulk ammo is Winchester Dynapoints.

A common issue with new 10/22s is stovepiping.
It goes away with lots of shooting.

My advice is break the gun completely down, clean it, lightly lube everything (use spray on dry lube for the bolt and inside reciever), clean your magazine, and shoot the heck out of the gun.
If you want, buy some CCI Stingers or Velocitors and shoot them first. Their extra recoil will definatly cycle the action and break it in a little quicker.

Remington is the worst of the bulkpack loads, IMO. My 10/22 seems to prefer Winchester Dynapoint. It's only a buck or so more than Remington, much cleaner, accurate, and reliable. Out of 1500 rounds, I've had 2 duds requiring a second strike.

A new extractor might help, but I'd make sure it's not the ammo first.

If Remington is the only ammo you've been using, try others first than post the results.

My 10/22s have not had any problems with Federal Lightning and Winchester Wildcats. The only ammo that consistantly jammed my .22s, including my Mk IIs, Browning Buckmarks and Marlin 15 and 25, is Remington Thunderbolts.

.22 lr is extremely dirty. Make sure the chamber and bolt fact are clean. You can use qtips dipped in Hoppe's. Federal Lightning works good in my 10/22's and you can get it for $8 brick at KMart. :)

MTNBKR is correct. Remington manufactures very bad 22 ammunition. They do not do a quality job of either making thier rims consistent or spinning the primer compound into them very well. Stay away from "bulk pack" 22. I do well with super x, and cci. My favorites are win. target and cci green tag.

Have also had trouble with the Remington bulk stuff. Mine don't shoot the Winchester as well as I like but they all really like the Federal bulk stuff for plinking fun. Clean it good and allow some break-in.

Welcome to THR, flyer! And, 10/22's are terrible, send me that one before it drives you mad. ;)

i had the same problem then i started to clean the rifle and mag more often and no more problems. try changing ammo also

Ive put well over a thousand rounds of the remington stuff fired in my 10/22 with few malfunctions due to ammo except some bad primers. I have had some feed problems due to bad after market mags. But consdiering ive had mabey 20 stove pipes, id say this is a pretty good track reccord for this cheap of ammo.

I agree the remington stuff is crap, and I wont put it in a .22 pistol, but my 10/22 eats it like a champ.

My 10/22 seems to like eveything EXCEPT the Remington "Golden Bullet" ammo...but will shoot the cheapy plain lead Rem "ThunderBolts"

Federals of all types, CCI Mini-Mag/Stinger/Velocitor, Winchesters.

Not the first time I have noticed that, though...The Rem Nylon 66 I had as a teen-ager would shoot anything EXCEPT the Rem Golden Bullet Hollow Point. The Golden solid worked great...Go figure a Rem rifle that didn't like Rem ammo.....sheeeeeeeeeeeeshhhhh

Short form answer....Try some other ammo before 'tuning' your 10/22.

I save the Rem bulk-pack ammo to use in my Single-Six revolver and Mk II pistol.

I, also, agree with the "Remington is crap" sentiment. The bullets are loosely seated (you can spin them very easily in the case), they have failures to detonate the primer, and the bullet will actually shift at an angle with the case to cause FTF. My 10/22 and the wife's 10/22 absolutely hate the Remington bulk box. We vow to never use it again. All other ammo seems to be eaten without many problems. My wife's 10/22 has had less than 500 rounds through it, so it is still seating in and causes a few FTF and FTE (stovepiping). My 10/22 (c.1981) has had thousands upon thousands of rounds through it, and I don't run across many problems.....except with that Remington ammo. The last stuff we bought was a brick of Federal, and it worked out pretty well. We are currently working on a brick of CCI Blazer.
