1000 Yard Scope

There's no problem explaining the merits of buying a $3000 scope. I believe the only reference to the more expensive scopes were also done with reference to lesser expensive scopes that may work as well. If you are shooting at 1000 yards and only 1000 yards some of the more durable, higher cost options probably aren't needed as you aren't going to be cranking through the adjustment range a ton. I do like the fixed magnification models for their durability and better glass for the dollar. That said, at 1000 yards, on days with a lot of mirage, being able to dial some magnification out is a great benefit as well. As long as you stay in the $500+ range I think you should be ok, with the more you spending adding to more and better features.

personally, i've found the nightforce benchrest model an ideal target scope. 12-42x, and expensive, but not ridiculously so, and quite a bit cheaper than their NXS line. I think I paid $1200 for mine.

It has all the features you want in a target scope, and none of the additional tactical stuff that jacks up the price. I like the reticle (mine's the 2DD) too.

as i said before though, the only thing that really makes a difference in target shooting is your ability to get a consistent sight picture. (assuming you're not fighting 'cheap crap' issues like adjustments that don't track or aren't repeatable) Often, when I'm shooting at 600 or 1000, i get my sight picture by lining up the square target frame with features on the reticle rather than putting the dot or crosshair right in the center, for example. i find that easier to do over and over again for 20 shots and it helps me think about cant, and the top of the target is usually a good spot to watch mirage.

I personally haven't seen glass i would consider acceptable at 600 yrds (or 200 yrds) that isn't equally serviceable at 1000.

I more or less want to try this because so many people say it cannot be done. I have most of what I need plus an old military small arms range that is slowly becoming overgrown. Why not give it a go. I am going to start out with what I have and see how far I can walk it out until it just wont perform any longer, then go on from there. I am not interested in competing or shooting 1" groups. If I can hit a 4x8 sheet of plywood, I would most likely consider it a success. Thanks for all of the suggestions and recommendations!

Scythefwd- I do not want to come on here and make false claims nor do I want to Hijack someone elses thread. In my short time on THR I can already see that you are a respected member and know what your talking about. I will have to get back out at my buddies farm and try and make some vids or atleast get pictures. I will also have him double check our numbers.

if you can hold a 2" group at 100yrd, you shouldn't have a problem with a 4x8' sheet of plywood at 1000. the only thing challenging about that will be driving over a mile between bangs to see if you hit it or not.

btw, you won't need a spotter. you can spot for yourself at that range. in fact, you can probably take a little nap after you pull the trigger before you look for the dirt flying :)

and yeah, you'll definitely have fun
