10mm: Glock 20 or Kimber 1911

I'm looking at the 10mm and have made the decision between a Glock 20 or a Kimber 1911.

I handled the Glock in the store today, seems chunky in the grip,a little awkward, but otherwise felt ok. I have a Kimber Custom TLE II in .45 and I like the way it grips in my hands. However I had some teething problems when I first got it and had to be sent back to Kimber for them to tweak it a bit for it to stop FTF and FTE.

does the Kimber 1911 in 10mm will have the same problems as their TLE II does with initial break in? Do they make aftermarket mags that can hold 10 rounds flush (e.g. Chip McCormick) for the Kimber?

anybody shoot both and preferred one over the other?

i dont have a glock [didnt say i couldnt use one....] cause the 1911 grip angle works for me. i only remember a flush 10 round mag kimber as a 3" poly 45 gun awhile ago.
get the kimber anyways--be happy. the recent production seems iffy; but once they are running proper it is worth it.

the Kimber 10mm comes in 5" so I would be interested in that one...I would agree, the 1911 grip feels nice but I would consider the Glock just because of the round capacity.

I have been wanting a Glock 10mm because of the price but if you can get a Kimber 1911 in 10mm go for it. I owned the Custom II once in 45acp and it shot and felt great.

+1 on the 10mm Eclipse. it's beautifully sinister. for some reason it reminds me of that Cadillac that's build on the Corvette chasis. it's like BLING, but coated in class

my budget is around $600 right now but could save up more in a few months. I don't shoot my other handgun (.45) all that much due to shooting mostly shotgun sports now, like sporting clays and skeet whenever I get the chance but since the cold weather has set in, I plan to switch to indoor handgunning for a few months, maybe a couple times a month (I plan to buy the canned heat bulk pack ammo and just burn that up each month) and I also shoot my handgun during the summer when visiting family up on their farm for a week or so, shooting at critters and old tree stumps.

I am lookin to get another handgun and want something with a lot of power but also more capacity than a revolver, hence my decision on the 10mm.

The Kimber failures could have been because of their external extractor they never seemed to be able to work the problems out of but have since gone back to the internal extractor and are the best yet. It just goes to show that even Kimber should never mess with John Browning.

I'm a huge Glock fan, but IMHO in your case the Kimber might not be a bad choice.

Glock has made the model 20 forever, and likely will long into the future. Even if they stopped, lots of used ones available everywhere.

The 10mm Kimber however being in such a niche cartridge with limited market could dissapear from the catalog in a hearbeat, and be difficult to find in the future.

BTW unconfirmed rumors of the Glock 20SF with the slightly smaller grip that might feel better to you still abound, might be yet another reason to buy the Kimber and wait and see with the Glock...

G20/29SF are supposed to be released this spring. To me, though, the SF really stands for "Still Fat".
I'm keeping my hopes out for a XD10.

I really like the Glock 20. Its my choice in 10 mm. However, I'm really looking forward to the Colt Delta comming back.

The 10mm isn't a carry gun for me, the 9mm, 40 S&W and 45 handle that. So I don't really worry about size on the Glock or the manual safety on the colt.

I alternate between my Glock 26 and my Glock 29 for carry, depending on conditions (clothing required, etc.).

I love the 29. It is somewhat larger than the 26, but still concealable. Lots of firepower in a relatively small package.

I went to the Glocks (I was shooting a Hi Power) after I took a couple of pistol courses. In simulated combat conditions I decided that the absence of external safeties is a big plus. It also became apparent to me that the higher capacity magazines are a big plus.

My opinion (everybody has one, and mine is no better or worse than anybody else's) is that if you want a pistol that is 100% ready for business right out of the box, will work real good and last a long time and requires very little in the way of maintenance, then the Glock is the best choice.

Glocks ain't pretty, but BG's or critters for that matter don't care a great deal about how pretty your pistol is. The Glock also fits rather nicely in your budget.

I am a 10mm fan from way back, I have a pair of Glocks, Delta Elites, S&W, even a witness, My favorite 45's are Kimers nof wich I own 4. I know you can never have too many guns. I am a 1911 fan, I only own the Glkocks because of the caliber. In my opinion the feel of a good 1911 is as close to perfection as you can come

For the price of the Kimber you can get a Glock 20, night sights, and conversion barrels in .40 short & weak, .357 sig, and 9x25 Dillon.

Interesting post...I have a similar problem....getting the "right" ten for me.

I want a 10 mm Auto but I had to give up for the following reasons:

1) I "cannot" like Glocks...I tried with all my heart and I been close to buy a Model 20 3 times..as a soon as it hit my hand, I really can't....and the SA only trigger with no external safety, no external hammer and no decocker make me EXTREMELY nervous about carrying one in the pipe..maybe is psycological but i cannot do nothing about it.

2) I do not like the 1911 platform...I just don't....and for a Kimber 10 mm Auto I would have to spend north of $1000.
If I could get a REALLY ridiculous screaming deal I may consider it but it's not going to happen...

3) The EAA Witness would be perfect for me and I owned one in the past. Unfortunately, especially the new ones with rounded slide top, they cannot be considered real 10 mm Auto because they can shoot safely only the mild FBI loads (equivalent of .40 S&W).
I heard and witenessed myself cracked slides when used with full house 10 mm loads even when using stiffer recoil springs.
On top of that ,the Customer Service is horrendous.


I'm still on the prowl for a good deal on a S&W 1006....

I wish SIG, Bersa or other similar platform would come out with a full size pistol in 10 mm auto....I'm a fan of DA/SA triggers, external hammers and decockers......double stack magazines are good too...

Till then I'll use my .40 full size with the hardest hitting loads (for example Double Tap hardcast) for "light wildlife protection when hiking, and my 8" 3/8 barrel 44 Mag revolver when I venture on big brown territory.

Not to take the OP's question too far off topic, but if you're considering waiting 'til SHOT '09 for a G20SF, be advised that Vltor has slated "first quarter of 2009" for releasing the 10mm Fortis pistol - reputedly an updated and much improved version of the Bren Ten, the first 10mm handgun made.

Unlike the BT, the internal geometry of the Fortis' mag well has been re-engineered to allow for a mag holding 15-rds. But Vltor's web blog also indicates that the Fortis retains the BT's original exterior grip dimensions, which, if you've ever handled one (I have), is noticably slimmer than, say, the grip of a 10mm Witness. Ironic, because both share CZ-genes.
