folks,

I'm fairly new to reloading and have a question, I'm wanting to load 9mm, 147 g JHP in some military brass with winchester primers. Has anyone every used HP-38 powder to reload 147 grain JHP in 9mm if so how many grains ? I'm having trouble finding the exact data to use hp-38.

HP-38 is same powder as W231. Maybe this will help.

Lyman #49 page 341.

147 gr Speer TMJ .355" OAL 1.115" W231 Start 3.5 gr 855 fps (23,000 CUP) - Max 4.1 gr 957 (27,500 CUP).

No HP38 data for a 147 gr. JHP in any of my books. It's too fast of burning for use with that heavy of bullet.
So why would Hodgdon publish load data for Titegroup which is faster burning than W231/HP-38?
147 gr Hornady XTP Titegroup .355" OAL 1.100" Start 3.2 gr (855 fps) 22,500 CUP - Max 3.6 gr (929 fps) 27,500 CUP

Sigma9mm,
The Lyman data given above shows an oal for a TMJ bullet, your JHP bullet will be a little shorter probably. Start LOW and work up.
